Twitter is now called X

Elon Musk has rebranded Twitter to “X” and the changes they propose is to be more like WeChat in China. That app is like an ecosystem in itself with many apps inside an app. On WeChat you can do stuff like voice/video calls, message, buy groceries, book doctor appointments, call a taxi and scan a QR code to send your CV off to a company. It’s pretty much impossible to do much in China without it. These new goals are very optimistic.

For those who use Twitter, will you continue to use “X” or bin it off and potentially switch to Threads?

Threads is shit (apparently) and lost a lot of its original membership.

There's a wide open goal for a serious rival, but there still isn't one.

I've tried Threads, but it's missing too many basic features. I recently got an invite code for Bluesky, which has all the features you need, but hardly anyone worth following.

They were stupid to launch Threads as early as they did. a few more months development with more features would have made it a serious competitor.

The issue with Bluesky is that it has no existing ecosystem to advertise or bring users in and it’s so hard to start a new platform when there are alternatives. It’s such a shame as I would 100% start using it.

That’s my thoughts too. If they had waited and made a polished experience from day 1 then it would have taken over. It was an own goal really. I’m pleased though as I can’t stand meta/Facebook as a company.

I liked Twitter when it was a thread of people I followed, with the odd interjection of related stuff. Now the "For You" is sponsored (paid for) accounts following an algorithm, and the "Following" tab seems to have been deliberately made a shit show with heavy advertising and a random mix of chronological and "most relevant" posts.

I'd like if it went back to who i'm following as a main newsfeed with maybe every ten tweets a paid / related tweet. I never see tweets my followers have liked or retweeted anymore, just the algorithm shit. It was the same with Facebook...initially it was great but then you got plagued with adverts and loads of unrelated shit.

I'd happily pay £5-10 per month for a genuine single source social network of people I wanted to follow without adverts, just status' and pictures. Possibly divided into mutual follows (friends & family) in one tab and follows (celebrities) in another. I suppose the problem is you'd need everyone you want on there willing to pay.
