Twitchers/birdwatchers - is this a sparrowhawk?

Yes.

Fence could do with a coat of woodstain mind.

It was sat there for a good 20 minutes while we were watching it. Seemed totally comfortable with us staring at it out of the window from about 10 feet away. Wasn't even bothered by the camera flashes before I turned off the flash.

Probably. We get them and always look them up on Google images,as they sometimes vary in appearance. Male and female look different. I would think, of the common birds it could be would be a Kestral. But looks a bit too big to be that.

what area do you live in.

I live in the strawberry bank area and there is a sparrowhawk that occasionally visits the area.

My neighbour saw 2 small birds on our fence that flew into our tree to hide.

a sparrowhawk then flew past.

we were going to trim the fir tree back, not now

Opened the front door a couple of months back to find one on the front lawn attacking a wood pigeon. It flew off but returned the following morning to claim it's prize.

A few times I've seen a mess of feathers on the lawn which I'm putting down to the same bird.
