Nick Barrit, now 66, was 24 in March 1979 when he bumped into Nilsen on the platform at Waterloo train station. He'd missed the last train home and Nilsen offered to take him for dinner.

I grew up in the 80s and just about everyone smoked. It felt quite strange watching the amount of tabs that kept getting sparked up.

Remember smoking on planes?

I smoked my last tab on a plane in 1990.

Much later I travelled on an Indonesian 747 (2002) and as soon as the seat belt light went out almost the entire plane load of passengers got up and went to the back to spark up.

It seemed very strange at the time
