TV licence

It's necessary to provide a comprehensive service(not just TV, of course) where everyone has things they can enjoy, and can moan about the "rubbish" they don't watch.

If you want to know what we'd get without the licence fee, then look at the diminution in quality at ITV since the 80s, when Thatcher ripped up all the regulatory standards and set it free.

ITV is loads better than it ever was..

Make it subscription based these days if only to shut the moany fuckers up.

Sky would still host the channels and charge you a tenner a month on your contract...

The problem lies around content for the website and radio etc. Somehow there would need to be a government tax revenue to cover that.

maybe put some channels behind a paywall and reduce the licensce fee to cover bbc1 and radio only

The Government have missed a trick with this problem.
They did not take into account the digital/online/streaming that came about at a rapid pace not so many years ago.

Previously it was simple
- If you own/buy a T.V. set -then you pay for a licence.

It is, IMHO, a better alternative to the status quo. The BBC is no longer fit for purpose, society has moved on.

There are many things that are better than the status quo. It is only reasonable to take into account whether they could actually be achieved if we as a country attempted them and the risk to it not working out like we hope

Here you go

https://www.ranker.com/list/itv-tv-shows-and-programs/voteable

Mr Selfridge
Soldier Soldier
Celebrity Juice
Broad church
Cold Feet
Liar
Safe House
Marcella

Etc etc..

All very good.

Well, the ranker list generally has very good shows on it but a lot are no longer made or, in the case of Midsomer Murders has been broad cast for 20 years, Corrie at number 9, since 1960 etc.

With regard to your list, Soldier Soldier aired from 1991-97 and I'd make some pretty major arguments about Celebrity Juice being better than comedy shows ITV showed 20, 30 or 40 years ago (e.g Spitting Image). The rest are all good TV (not all to my taste but not everything should be) but, aside from Broadchurch, are they significantly better than ITV's dramas of the 70s, 80s or 90s?

I think nothing would be an improvement to the status quo for the majority of the country.

It was crap, believe me.BBC was always seen as more high brow.ITV was a commercial latecomer.A bit tough round the edges.

Oh, I can believe it. From the time, I mostly remember children's TV and sport plus some sitcoms (and Corrie). Late 70s, things like The Professionals and Minder. Quiz/game shows as well, I guess.

You're one of those very rare animals, like people who say they never get sick and haven't had a day off work in 40 years, as 95% of the population use it every week.
I have never had a day off work in 30 years, I use holidays when I am ill.

Love a good Beeb bashing thread.

Long live the licence.

I remember a poster on here once declaring he never ever watched BBC. Then a couple of weeks later declared Dr. Who to be his favourite ever TV programme. Wally.
