Turner...

Premiership defenders can do more than just head it out of play and lash it upfront to nobody, or even make a simple pass instead of booting it out of play.

Yeah he won his header, but he has a number of areas that are very weak.

Are you genuinely criticising Michael Turner for not being a complete centre half? Ferdinand had an outstanding pass completion rate tonight but I know which centre half I'd rather have in my team. No one is saying he is perfect, but he gets his head on things and defends very well indeed.

He was good without being fantastic. A solid defensive performance which is what you want. Broke down most of their attacks pretty well, I just wish he'd find one of our players more when taking it out of defence.

Good enough for the first 30 england squad.

He's nowhere near good enough for England. If he'd of been called up I'd of put him in one of the worst England teams ever. You've gotta have some pace about you or positional sense, and he isn't great at neither. He can't pass and his clearences are most of the time miss kicked.

he is a disaster waiting to happen much like ferdinand

only we could spend that much cash on the new Pies Butler

Turner reads the game very well, and is nails. There's one goalpost that'll be feeling the full force of his knackers for several weeks yet.

What I am saying is that he causes more pressure for us with his shabby clearances, poor passing and often poor decisin making. I think there was one incident in the first half where he forgot to kick the ball and it hit his shin.

Back to the wall defending and he'll clear things, but he's miles away from being a top 10 defender for me.

The big issue I have with him is that, if he comes up against a big, physical striker, he generally gets pulled apart.

In the last year I've seen Carroll, Carlton Cole and Heskey all rip him to shreds. You'd expect them to be the battles he'd thrive in.

If he can sort that on, then I'm sold on him. Until then, I'm still a bit cautious.

I think struggles generally for mobility when the ball is on the floor and can get exploited if someone has the strength and touch. His strength is definitely when the ball is in the air.

Nice to meet you Mr Capello. Your English is coming on a treat.

I agree. He picks up the flight of the ball very quickly indeed.

I wouldn't say his passing is "poor". He may misplace one or two passes a game, but who doesn't? I don't think he is brilliant on the ball or owt daft like that, but he generally doesn't have any difficulty in finding a team mate. The stats certainly back that up, anyway.

Those bleating about Turner will have to bleat further if one of Ferdy or Turner gets injured.
Mensah's continued malingering may mean we have to resort to PdS.
He's still dining out on one good game against Arsenal last season, other than that he's clearly not up to scratch.
Very very worrying

So u missed Man U away (very unlucky for the goal). He has played very well against other teams over the last two years in central defence, however again you haven't a clue about football......

I thought Turner looked average, great clearance off the line, other times out of position / slow. The chance at the end summed both of them up tbh.

Ferninand looked gone mentally from the club a long time ago when not given a squad number didn't see anything last night to see a change in him.

I'd almost forgot you had an irrational hatred for DaSilva.

Am i the only one who thought he was good tonight then?

Carried Anton all night and bailed him out big time with that goal line clearence. He did put the ball out needlessly a couple of times like but i thought he dealt with most of Everton's aerial attacks and read some of the passing moves well.

I thought he was excellent. Headed everyting away, good goal line clearence. Steady. Arguably my man of match.

I don't see "irrational hatred" in Des' views on PDS. I think he simply doesn't rate him, and based on his performances here, who is to say he is wrong?

I disagree about him carrying Anton, because I thought Anton had a good game as well, but Turner deserves a medal for that goal line clearance.

As soon as it happened I "whooped" in delight and proclaimed to my Everton-supporting friend I was watching the game with, "Who was that, that just earned himself Freedom Of The City Of Sunderland?"

When I saw it was Turner, that changed to "Well, at least some folk might stop slagging him off now."

Turner was his usual self, utter f***ing shit! The sooner we get rid of him, the sooner we'll progress.

Then again... maybe not.

Would have liked him to do a better job of marking Cahill around...oh 5 mins in.

Biggest problem with last nights pairing is that they didn't look out for each other (goal line clearance aside). They should be partners not individuals.

Played centre half a little bit over the years and even though it was far from my favourite position played it my last full season in my mid 30's.
Me and the kid who played there kept 10 clean sheets over the last 10 games of the season (plus a friendly v a team 2 leagues above us), people who play sunday league will know that is quite impressive as scorelines are generally more akin to 5-3 etc.
It was because we constantly covered each other, if he challenged for the ball I would sweep and vice versa. We always knew where the other person was and communicated constantly.

Turner and Hooch looked like strangers at times. The Last Everton chance was awful, Ferdinand misread a hoof up the pitch and Turner just stood and watched.
For me Anton cocked up by missing the clearance, but Turner also cocked up for not covering his partner.

But you know what you get with him, 100% effort, will win most balls launched towards our back line and 50-50 challenges. But lacking in pace and poor distribution.
