Anar and its 17 pund return for a quality ride door to door, stopp fannying about and get on GC no other option in my mind. here we gan tin hat

You'd spend an hour getting to Durham from Sunderland, so mite as well wait at Sunderland at get GC to York. Like others say, if the GC return to Sunderland is not on, then other operators allow you on the train (and I guess, would bill GC for the pleasure), so not as thou you'll be stuck in York
 
The ride down the Durham coast is also pretty good (and a coastal journey is quite rare on a train). If you're doing it for a leisure break surely the relaxing scenery is summay which would add to the occasion. If you travel from Durham the best part is disappearing while you look out the window on the left when it's pulling out of Durham station. After that it's just railway cuttings and then farmers fields after you cross the Tees.
