Top 6

yr right of course but history tends to suggest that come may them 8 will be there or thereabouts.

Well that's where we have to come in isn't it.....

I'm an eternal optimist anyway so i'm fully expecting to break into the top 8 this season. Won't be shocked or dissapointed if we don't but i'm def hoping and dreaming about finishing in top 6-8. It's where we would want to be really considering the money we have spent since promotion. When Quinn talked of that 5 year plan when we were in the championship i don't think he was hoping for a mid table finish in year 4...that would of been year 3.
In year 4 of 5 year plan now and breaking into top 8 is, i would imagine, the plan for most people within the club..... although non of them will want to come out and proclaim it.

Recently 7th spot has been getting teams in to europe and if you look at who has finished 7th in previous seasons than we have a chance.

With the exception of last season maybe
2009/2010 - Liverpool
2008/2009-Fulahm
2007/2008- Blackburn
2006/2007 - Bolton
2005/2006- Newcastle and Blackburn finished 6th that season

So if you look at it like that there is always one team that manages to upset the odds and squeeze into the top 7. I know Villa and Everton have improved since then but why cant we be the team that upsets the odds this season and squeezes in there? Or if we cant do it through the league theres always a chance of doing it through the cup. Now I wouldnt call my self deluded just being optimistic.

They have improved but are starting to backwards again now.... neither team boost a striker of note at the moment. Strikers are where your need to spend big these days and that is where we have caught up with these teams thanks to Niall and Ellis.

Various clubs with less capacity, fanbase and resources have played in Europe ....... as I've said, on here before, there's no logical reason we can't finish in the top 8 or even 6.

The only thing that's stopped us in the past has been a lack of ambition and investment ... that seems to have been addressed and we just need the squad to perform, like they did on Sunday, on a more regular basis.

Not that much to ask surely

True, but you always have to fight various laws of probability ;)

:lol::lol:

That stat above about the teams finishing 7th is a good one like. Although man city have only recently become (in my eyes anyhow) the established 8th team. All it takes is for one of them to suffer a spate of injuries though. I`d love to see sunderland in europe, i hope i get the chance !!!

10th poss 9th will do for me

I know it would signal progress but i think the clubs aims will be to finish a little better than that. We could of finished 10th last season going into the final game of the season if results went well and that was after going on that awful run of 14 games without a win. Birmingham finished last season in 9th after coming up from the championship and spending very little money.

We broke our transfer record the last two summers in a row running and i don't think that was done with the hope of finishing 10th....we got to start aiming a bit higher imo.

fair comment. just experience of safc over the decades. as long as relegation is out of the question come the end of march, at the latest, then our last 6 games are all winnable and a decent run from end of march to may, could see us finish in the top 8

I think the everton game is massive, it will be a big indication I think of where we are going. Can we follow up a massive win against chelsea with another big display, if we play really well and beat everton it will be another of last seasons top 10 that we would have done well against.

And I think the bottom half teams will struggle to deal with welbeck, bent and gyan

Very true, its just whether we can play well against them and defend properly, the two teams we lost against we went to sleep at the back and didnt look a shadow of the team that pulled out wins and draws against the big clubs. Went to sleep at the back against WBA and as for the scum, enough said. We need consistency, and that will move us up; a win against Everton would be massive.

Chelsea were 'shite' on Sunday but will still win the league.

Villa were beaten 6-0 but will still be looking at Europe.
Arsenal were battered, at home, by West Brom, but will finish top 4.

The only thing to stop Sunderland finishing top 6 is us.
We have a great squad, have already played 9 of last season's top 10 and have a fantastic team spirit despite the derby shambles.

I'm prepared to throw off years of pessimism and believe.
Perhaps if we all did the club & players would get the message and fulfill their potential .......... I believe ;)

Don't get me wrong, you have a point but I have had 40 years of false dawns, and we got our fingers burned badly predicting an easy win at St James. I just think we should show a little more restraint before we start bigging them up again. If we are still 6-8 by christmas I will start to believe that the improvement we have seen is more permanent. All this talk of Europe will be bumped by the mags on here if the wheels come off in the next couple of weeks.

After Sunday, why not let people dream?

Why assume we will default to shite? We are undefeated against Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, Man C, Liverpool, Spurs and Villa taking 13 points and them taking 4.
We are a work in progress and have had two defeats (one of them being a disaster) but with a half decent run anything can happen.

I reckon 8th will be fine and is achievable.
