Tony Hancock

Who, Tony Hancock, Paul Weller or both?
TH's house, complete with memorabilia, photo's etc, it was a virtual shrine...my gf at the time was Hancock's ex gf's housekeeper.

ps. TH's ex was also as mad as a box of frogs...she was fab :D

The jury room was last night. Very funny. Made a blooper. Stopped and smirked and carried on. Can tell it is dated, but there again it is

I would like to say he was a genius, but when you listen to his very late stuff, ater he cut his ties with Galton and Simpson, I'm not so sure.

However, his work with the usual cast is timeless. The interplay, and the delivery between the cast members is a joy. So I will go with my heart and say that he was indeed a genius, even if it was only in his interpretation of a script.

He was a destructive individual who drank himself to death. Reads like he got to the stage where he could barely function, handed guests pints of vodka at his parties. Iirc he broke his wife’s nose with a shoe when she was trying to stop him drinking, she ended up trying to kill herself and he had an affair with John le Mesuriers wife after she tried to get him dried out

Alcohol and mental health issues destroyed him. Watched some of the show he recorded in Australia, wish I hadn't.

I only heard the audio of later shows, might have been in Oz, and it made me think of Krusty when he did stand-up. Absolutely dreadful.

I prefer to think of The Student Prince, Wildman of the Woods, Blackboard Jungle, etc. Week in, week out, Sid would line him up as the patsy. Hatty and Bill would be on the receiving end of his abuse. Kenneth Williams would appear as an idiot.

He was definitely up there with the best.

Spot-on.

Millions tuned in to Hancock’s Half Hour on the radio and on BBC TV in the days before we were bombarded with telly. His shows were almost a certain subject of conversation in workplaces the next day, even down the pit at bait time,

And they were classics with Sid James, Bill Kerr, and regulars like Hattie Jacques, John Le Mesurier and Patricia Haynes.
