He apparently said the game could go ahead, subject to no further adverse weather, although he had "concerns" about the pitch. The forecast indicated that that was nigh-on certain to happen. It was obvious even on photos that the pitch wouldn't be able to withstand anything more than light rain. The prudent course would have been to postpone.
There might have been a high likelihood of rain but what if the forecast was wrong. Imagine the shit he would have got for calling off a game in case it rained.

Reverse the situation and I’m sure you’d see their point of view.

Not really, I'd expect it covered as part of my season card, of course I would, but if the first one effectively didn't count as a game as part of my season card I wouldn't make an argument for expecting the away fans to pay again. It's either a totally new game for everyone or a replacement game for everyone

@Doberman makes a fair point mind, will their season card holders have to pay extra for the rearranged game? I can understand them charging, overheads and all that, but if their fans don't pay extra (at least not their ST holders), seems a bit harsh if ours have to
They pay for every league game so no they shouldn't pay more. Same as our ST holders if one of ours were abandoned.

The guidelines they get suggest erring on the side of caution. The pitch had standing water an hour before kick off. It's debatable whether it was actually playable at that point. The "football" in the first half, which the ball sticking more than once supports that. If he'd called it off, I don't think he'd have had too many complaints (except, probably, from those who had made it to the ground).

But effectively we pay to watch SAFC against every team at home once. For our away fans they're basically saying you've seen Accrington v SAFC. Whether it's an individual ticket or part of a package you've either seen that game and need to pay again for the rearranged fixture or you haven't. Shouldn't be one rule for one and another for others

So you’d happily pay extra to see a SAFC home game replayed after being abandoned?

Course you would.

Replay tickets should be discounted for those who attended yesterday.
But we will take shitloads again whatever so they probably won't do it.

If it didn't rain and he called it off because of a forecast you wouldn't be on here defending him.

How the fuck did you take that from my post? I literally said "Id expect it covered as part of my season card, of course I would" and then said I just wouldn't expect the away fans to pay again (the bit where I said "I wouldn't make an argument for expecting the away fans to pay again"). So no, I wouldn't happily pay again, I'd expect it covered as part of my season card and wouldn't argue that the away fans should pay again, exactly as I posted

Whilst I agree with u fully on the point they shouldn't pay for something out of there control. That match shouldn't of started the pitch was touch and go and rain forecast. I left at half time cos was blatantly obvious game wouldn't finish. The cynic in me finds it funny that it was called off about exactly as the acceptable time for not giving refunds arrived. For the record i thought head stewards and police were unhelpful and rude yesterday(I was sober) also I don't expect nor want any reimbursing for anything and I'll be at rearranged game

I hope you weren't wearing that cream jacket, it'll be ruined.

There was a picture on his Twitter feed with a rough calculation of his gate takings yesterday. It was under £70k. That wouldn't cover the wages for Catts and Oviedo for a week. Out of that he has to meet his own players wages and all the match day overheads. Accrington's annual turnover isn't disclosed at CH, because it's classed as a micro-company, but their turnover is probably not much more than £3m. They simply can't afford a one-match freebie.
Appreciate the sentiment, but you're way out on the turnover. Might be half that amount. The chairman did say at the start of the season that the annual wage budget was £1.1m, which is £21,000 per week. That is in total, not per person. Yes, they're in the same division as sunderland on merit, but the financial gulf is still there.

It doesn’t count for anything so in effect that’s what it is yes.

For those saying they could do anything, they could have went to any hardware store and bought a couple of hundred quids worth of tarpaulins and covered the pitch a few days previously, when the weather set in.
That wouldn't have stopped the rain falling, it would have just meant it landed on a tarpaulin. What do you suggest they should have done with 100,000 gallons of water and the drains all full?

Incidentally, they do have tarpaulins. They work for normal amounts of rain, but not for what we have had this week.

I thoroughly enjoyed my day out. I knew it might rain, I knew I had no cover. I knew it was £20 a ticket. I saw 80% of the game and had the full day out. I got very very wet. I got hailstones in my eyes. By the way it was bloody great.

I realise that Accrington Stanley had the full expenses of any normal home day for them. I also realise that they were bloody brilliant hosts.

If they charge the same for the second game (as they are fully entitled to do by the way), I will probably pay it again and go as they are a great club and it was a cracking place to go. No complaints from me at all. This wasn't Accrington's fault in the slightest and why should they not try and make a few quid? It also gives the fans of our lot who wanted to knock off Accrington away the chance to do it as it will go to general sale for a midweek match, No doubt those who moaned they could not get a ticket for Saturday will now have some other excuse for not going and will return on another away day thread moaning about how they cannot build up their loyalty points.

Complimentary coaches from SAFC would be s nice touch and relatively cheap to arrange.

That would be good and I would be happy if they did it, but Sunderland make no money from away games and don't make any extra if we have to play them twice. In fact we will have spent cash on travel and hotels on Saturday for the team and now have to do it all again.

We are not in the PL and smothered in cash and we cannot really afford to be paying for fans to go to away games for free, when we get no money from the gate receipts. If people want to go to the re arranged game that is their choice and should be at at their expense and that's coming from someone who was there yesterday and may well go back for the re-arranged game.

Only a few years back (I imagine the situation has changed now) you had a number of players in the team that were holding down other jobs as well just to get by and only being paid £200/£300 a week by the club.

Andy Holt has said that tickets won’t be valid for re-arranged fixture. Disgraceful IMO, 20 quid ticket and 30 quid travel (minimum) for 70 minutes of a friendly against Accrington f***ing Stanley.
That's always been the case for abandoned matches. I remember the Sunderland fans standing our ground at Grimsby when it got abandoned after 7 minutes. We wouldn't leave until we were given a refund. Over an hour later we were eventually given a voucher for the rearranged fixture.
