Thoughts on Doddsy as our next manager?

No
he doesnt want it
That's the impression I get too , more interested in a day off and shopping

His seat on the bus is coaching ,I'd rather he stayed here coaching long term rather than breaking him and sacking him in 6 months as head coach

He's tied to Speakman and any new head coach will need to accept that Dodds stays on board

The question is, if we appoint Still and he brings his own staff in, does that mean bye bye Doddsy? I feel like that would be a mistake, as mentioned previously seems to have a tremendous rapport with the players.

On the flip side if we appoint Dodds, eventually we'll hit a bad run and then he'll be gone anyway.

Its a tough one, he's gone and made things very difficult

Its a gamble especially if the club has a new coach lined up, if its Still they might not get another chance in the summer to sign him. At the moment Doddsy is definitely getting a tune out of the players.
Agree, but on the flip-side; what if we never get a chance with Dodds again?

What if Dodds is the managerial messiah and we fuck him off for some pretender in france? Hypothetically

Nobody we appoint will bring in all of their own staff. That’s the whole point in our director of football model; continuity.

Remember these are not the first two games hes been in charge. Anyone remember bottom of the table Doncaster at home and Cheltenham away? His tactical nous was not in evidence in either of those games.

To be fair to him, back then he was our youth team coach. He wasn’t working with the first team at all until he was asked to be caretaker. He didn’t know the players, he didn’t know the opposition.

In his role before taking caretaker-charge this time, one of his roles was to analyse the opposition and come up with a plan tactically on how to beat them. And in the very very limited sample set of data so far he has executed it perfectly so far. Both in the initial set-up and then also in the mid-game adaption

He has displayed that tactically he is there. The words from the players has been positive, he’s well liked.

The performances have been of a high level and vastly different which is a great indicator of his knowledge, versatility and ability to communicate ideas.

One of the things that niggle me is I don’t think I’d take a bollocking from him seriously - I don’t know if he’s got that edge and I think that’s a huge part of being a top No1.

But that’s an opinion from afar, he might be a right bastard!

I was well impressed with how we setup tonight, even if we'd not scored and they had I would say Dodds nailed it. In the post match interview 09 and Bellingham were talking about Dodds like he's a mate, it's all a bit Sbragia for me. Maybe that is more likely to work in the modern game?

Not for me don't take the cheap easy option we did it with Mowbray so don't do it again. What Dodds has shown in just 2 games is how tactically clueless Mowbray was but that is not enough to make Dodds an automatic candidate.

I am worried that the players may not necessarily take to a new guy when they clearly like Doddsy and he’s certainly gave a good account of himself in the role. If Still isn’t available I’d be tempted to give him till the end of the season

I always remember Denis Smith saying that he knew Crosby would fail as Sunderland boss. His thinking was something like that when you’re a coach you can get close and pally with the players gaining their trust etc but knowing that youd never be blamed for leaving them out/disciplining them.

When you become responsible though, eventually all of that goes away and the reaction from the players falls with it.

Last time we did it we went from Smith to Crosby to Butcher to Buxton. Results were not good.

I’d like to see Dodds stay but not as head coach. Saying that though I wouldn’t complain if he was given a chance
Dennis smith didnt know for certain he was just playing the billy big balls hindsight card....Crosby got us to the fa cup final and not many managers in our history have done that and its not as if the next manager did out!

No.

As we saw with Sbragia and countless other caretakers, the pressure is different when you are the top guy on a permanent basis.

Don’t get me wrong - he’s been excellent. I sort of felt half the SMB could have beaten West Brom as he just did what everyone was calling for in terms of small and obvious tweaks to Mowbray football. But tonight was a tactical masterclass.

But - we should be going all out to get Still. And keeping Dodds as a well respected coach who is hopefully part of the furniture here long-term.
This for me, there were rumours that a sticking point for Still was he wanted to bring in his own backroom team but the club want to keep some in place. I think Dodds has earned his right to stay on the coaching team.

What Dodds has done is to show all the sentimental supporters just why it was time for Mowbray to move on. Just the little tweeks we have improved. We bring in a more tactically adept coach which all of the targets are we could do something special.

Thought he was quoted in the press he wanted the job?

I don’t think it needs to be labeled. He can be on a rolling basis while we take our time, tell him show us if you want it, if he earns the job during that time before secure someone, then he plays his way in to it
