Thoughts on Doddsy as our next manager?

I’ve seen a lot of posts from people tonight saying “no thanks”, and I’m curious to know why?

If you had asked me when Mowbray was sacked, then I’d have firmly said “No” before you had even finished asking the question, but in those last two games I’ve been very impressed. I thought West Brom were there for the taking, but they won convincingly tonight, and that Leeds team were bloody good tonight, I don’t think Mowbray would have won that.

I’m still not 100% yes, but I’m definitely not 100% any more.

Tactically tonight he was perfectly. His press conferences have been spot on. He seems very confident and deliberate in everything he does. The players seem to love him. Could he not be the young hidden gem that we are looking all over Europe for?

It’s early days still, but tonight was very impressive, and I’m starting to be converted.

Because there’s too much chance involved.
The last two games have been brilliant results but in the first half Jobe and Ba gave Leeds the ball loads! Leeds seemed lethargic or confused or just cold and wet but on another day they could have took advantage.

I mean I’d support him if he got the job but I’d prefer someone who had proper managerial ambitions

Whatever happens, he's put himself in the shop window.
I'd imagine he'd be gagging to be the manager of a football club and would be open to offers.
Strange times indeed 🤷‍♂️🤔

He’s certainly put his hat in the ring. Players definitely playing for him and not scared to change the line up to suit the opponent.

No.

As we saw with Sbragia and countless other caretakers, the pressure is different when you are the top guy on a permanent basis.

Don’t get me wrong - he’s been excellent. I sort of felt half the SMB could have beaten West Brom as he just did what everyone was calling for in terms of small and obvious tweaks to Mowbray football. But tonight was a tactical masterclass.

But - we should be going all out to get Still. And keeping Dodds as a well respected coach who is hopefully part of the furniture here long-term.

Great coach, and for that reason shouldn't be our head coach. Head coaches get sacked and move on, we need people like Dodds as a consistent for young players whilst everything else in football moves on relatively quickly.

We need consistency in coaching staff in the background. I would prefer he stay there and coach long term. That way someone else can stand at the front and get the sack.

For me that would be the only reason. Also, would he even want it? It’s a lot of pressure.

To be clear, I think he is doing a cracking job.

Read through the match thread. Before a ball was kicked we were doomed. Seelt moved from being total shite to a potential man of the match. We have some right nuggets on here. :)

This

Five to eight “what formation is he playing” “set up for a draw” “doesn’t have a clue” “set up not to lose”

Ten o clock

“Give him the job” “what’s the worst that can happen”

I always remember Denis Smith saying that he knew Crosby would fail as Sunderland boss. His thinking was something like that when you’re a coach you can get close and pally with the players gaining their trust etc but knowing that youd never be blamed for leaving them out/disciplining them.

When you become responsible though, eventually all of that goes away and the reaction from the players falls with it.

Last time we did it we went from Smith to Crosby to Butcher to Buxton. Results were not good.

I’d like to see Dodds stay but not as head coach. Saying that though I wouldn’t complain if he was given a chance

Correct. I've been there and it's very true. Not at any great level thouugh, but high enough to make it matter.

Playing devils advocate here, and I’m making a bit of a reach, but what if the puppet that is given the crown is actually shite?

From what we have seen in the last two managers, AN especially, they would initially set up well tactically and adapt to each opponent, but then struggle a little in game. What if Dodds was the puppet master helping with the set-up pre-match, but then the in-game management was left up to them? Maybe Neil listened to Dodds in-game more than Mowbray did, which could explain why The snake was so shite at Stoke where he looked great here.

So hypothetically if the above were correct, then what if the new gaffer is arrogant but shite, so he ignores Doddsys sound advice?

All of the above is a tremendous reach, but I am seriously asking though is it worth suppressing a good manager with a shite one in the name of continuity?

This time last week it’s a no from me however after to tonights performance in particular it’s given a decision for KLD he might not have expected.

Tonight he got the tactics spot on, was strange in a way seeing us sitting deeper but it worked perfectly.

I’ve just listened to him post match and he speaks very well, should we stick or twist?

KLD is pacing up and down “FFS Dodsy, now look what you have gone and done!”

Its a gamble especially if the club has a new coach lined up, if its Still they might not get another chance in the summer to sign him. At the moment Doddsy is definitely getting a tune out of the players.

Very different times though. Back then management was a much more autocratic affair.

We are looking for a head coach rather than a manager.

Young players like we have thrive on new ideas. They are like sponges and take it all in and try to implement it.

I think if we bring in a young coach from outside the club he will bring in a different view point and the players will learn more from him than from someone they already know. At the end of the day our plan depends on developing the players. They will have learned from Mowbray and they will have learned from Dodds (who they already knew), but I say keep Dodds as a coach and bring in an outsider with fresh ideas.

We all know we have some very good young players, the more ideas and tactics they get exposed to the better they will be.
