Is going a bit too far.

I've just seen on SSN a fella standing outside of Old Trafford, burning effigies of Wayne Rooney and selling them to the....

Oh, hang on... sorry... they were jacket potatoes.

Yes, our members appear to have gone quiet on here over Rooney ever since the now infamous "best english player in 40 years" post and thread.

Has done nothing much for England when it has come to the big tournaments and the big opposition. Also his personal life looks a mess.

Now that's funny

Not looking to start a massive debate about it, but in the last 40 years (or, at least since the last of the 66 boys retired, like Charlton and that), has there been a better English footballer?

There's not many met your criteria of doing it in tournaments, and there's very few can ever be considered in the highest quality of players in the world at their time (which, in club terms, Rooney is).

Only really Lineker who would push him, possibly Gazza but his memory is tainted by the fact he fucked it up.

More of an indictment of English football, but he's certainly not a million miles from being the best English footballer of the last 40 years.

Agreed 100%

Twice the player Rooney is/was (I think he's finished personally). Daft as the proverbial off the field, but very very clever on it, which Rooney isn't. Like a lot of our modern 'stars', potato heed's a brilliant instinctive footballer but needs the intelligence of the foreign players who are brought up to fully understand the game to bring the best out of him. We don't teach our players to think for themselves any more. Well, either that or the twenty grand a week at age eighteen culture has removed the desire from lads to learn and improve. As a nation we're so easy to figure out it's laughable, we run out of ideas after about ten minutes.

Rooney is good, but you already mentioned one reason why he is a million miles away: Lineker

Lineker was a world class finisher, not a world class footballer.

One good season in his career.

I've said this before, but he hasn't lost his form, he's found it.

I think you might be right.

Another massively promising young talent who hasn't really moved an inch in terms of development. In fact, he was probably better when he broke into the Everton and England team than he is now, no fear, go and get the ball and get at them. I thought he was going to be the best in the world.

What happens to these lads?

agreed, but if your talking about impact in important games/tournaments then Lineker must top the pile

Agree completely, you could put the house on him scoring when it really mattered. He went off the boil when he was made captain and felt as though he had to be involved deeper, and he was never really a hold-up player.

Gazza and him together were a joy to watch.

Remember away to Poland I think to qualify for Euro 92 needing a draw and 1-0 down and you just new Lineker would pop up with 10 minutes or so on the clock
