They get Benfica, we get... relegated?

i think you are correct in what you are saying.
We struck lucky to be honest, we invested JUST at the right time, the start of the prem, we invested and kept on investing, almost to bankruptcy but i think it gave us more of a global reputation, certainly a local reputaion which gave us more fans. Sky Tv wanked all over us for the entertainers (and to be honest you can see why, we played some good football) and we live off that reputaion.

that wasnt sustainable though, micky mouse signings like owen almost ruined us as a club. Thankfully Ashley came in and has given us the medacine we didnt want but we needed. we are now sustainable and have a proper well thought out recrutment policy, where players are not just bought on reputation and "ability". We scout the players that we NEED and we scout players that will have financial value for re-sale.

you are right that as a club at the moment you are not foreward thinking. i think you were when you had quinn and the irish consortium. i think you need to follow suit (i think alot of clubs are going to find similair plans as us) and have an indipendant scouting network, realise that as a club (we think this too about us) you are a stepping stone for the big clubs. so the transfer policy should be young hungry players. experience and age is all well and good, and i belive a mixture is good, but young hungry players the way forward. like n'dye (sp?) whickem (sorry, again sp?) bye players that can fit straight into the team. whickem  i dnot understand that decision.

ohh fuck ive rambled on and made no point, i am gunna get fuck off mag anyway though
in a nutshell, yeah i think taking a leaf out of our book wouldnt be a bad thing. we copied arsenal, they aint doing to bad either

:eek::lol:

Nobody gives a fuck about Newcastle (or Sunderland for that matter) south of Scotch Corner. Try getting out once and a while you know, broaden your horizons.

What about Swansea? 8th in the league and have a cup in locker, signed some good foreign players and looked to bring in a good foreign coach. We've gone out and bought yet again more British crap and paid way over the odds again. You get what you pay for.

Best post of the thread, Swansea should be the blueprint not the scum (though they are still signing better players than us and generally for less money) and the taffs are doing this a season after coming up and on 20k crowds.

Fair play to them, they've done well with a smallish squad to get to the quarters of a major European competition. I wouldn't bet against them either. They have players of the calibre of Tiote, sissoko and Cabaye, and play pretty decent attacking football, whilst I watch the turgid rubbish dished up by a dreary set of players and a manager with no ideas.

Same old same old. Am I jealous? Yes. In my 45 years of watching Sunderland, I can't really remember any time other than fleetingly for a couple of seasons when we've been better than them. They seem at the moment to have their club geared up to spending money wisely, doing their homework and getting value for money. We've consistently skunked millions on trash and employed dinosaur managers.

Time to go back to the drawing board Ellis, and although it sticks in my craw to say it, take a leaf out of their book. Get rid of this dreary manager and replace him with someone with ideas and a philosophy. Preferably foreign. Have a 3 - 5 year plan to get rid of the current squad except talented youngsters and replace them with quality. I've had enough of living in their f***ing shadow!!!

That policy has kept us up for longer than previous.

Why foreign?!?!? That's the sort of comment I'd expect from a young kid.

I think people need to realise the Mags have been in the Premiership in all but one season in the last 20 year & they are certainly more established than us.

The thing is, all I can see that Ellis Short has done wrong is not ensure we have a good scouting system, whether this is MON's remit or Shorts I don't know. Everything else Short has done to perfection

That's exactly why they can do it mate, the manager/team has no pressure on them and no expectations.

the sad fact is for some on here, whatever happens at Newcastle is how they judge what happens for us.

If,

Newcastle were bottom of the league and not in europe and we were still in the same postion we are, many would be happy with our progress.

aye reeeetttoooo

my horizons are very wide.
but we have had club representatives from plenty of clubs up here looking at our model. same as we sent representatives to arsenal and thats the policy we copied (and adapted)

people might not give a fuck but they are not blind. a club competing in the prem making a profit. a successful transfer policy and 10year contracts etc. other clubs take notice of things like this. financial fair play means clubs have to take care of what they are doing.

yup no one gives a fuck about a club matching the fair play rules.
nope they certainly wont enquire how we do this, nope, after all we are just a wee club from the north. just because you have no network doesnt mean that clubs dont.

Your stupidity certainly is.

the OP is almost correct in everything said. Tiote is shit and they don't really play decent football but aside from that you're correct.

It's more the management side of things. We seem to forget that Short got MON on the advice of other people and in fairness it was a big move. But I think O'Neill hasn't moved with the times. He still has this buy British and workman like way of playing. Those days are gone.

 yup

haway man mate,

"but we have had club representatives from plenty of clubs up here looking at our model."

"10year contracts etc"

give your head a shake
