Olivier's voice-over was fantastic.
So many of the words have stayed with me:
The end of the episode about the fall of France (I think) :- "....Britain stood alone", (something the Americans should be forced to remember).
The one about Oradour-Sur-Glane :- "...the day the soldiers came...".
The end of the episode dedicated to Japan where he comments on their eventual fate :- "...Irresistible. Unimaginable. Mushroom-shaped.".
Such savagery. That village remains the same today. Left as it was when the SS called. It`s on my list of places to visit. I`ve read a book on it and the photographs are truly horrific. What is equally as tragic is after what the French had been through they`d have ensured nothing like that happened again yet when they went into Indo China and Algeria, they adopted the same reprisals on the locals as had been inflicted on them during the war.Olivier's voice-over was fantastic.

Well, he is a luvvie, dah-lean.Agreed, but he irrationally really irritated me by always saying star-lean when pronouncing Stalin!
You're right - it was the first episode. And it very definitely sets the tone for the whole series.I think its the fact he doesn't really change his tone - but he adjusts his speaking speed to emphasise points and isn't the one about Oradour-Sur-Glane :- "...the day the soldiers came... at the very beginning of the first one where he sets the scene for the whole series.
Makes you wish we’d lost!ITV - From The World At War to X Factor in 40 years.
Driving School?A documentary series that will never be matched.
There was a documentary on Speer recently about his self proclaimed reputation as "The Good Nazi" when he was appearing on chat shows and treated like a celebrity. That was well and truly debunked. He knew exactly what was going onSurprised Karl Wolfe and Speer can keep straight faces when they claim they new nowt or very little about the Holocaust
Iirc they were shown on a Sunday at about 7pm when I was a kid. You've seen them all before many times, but when you come across it going through the channels you end up being drawn in. Watched the Operation Barbarossa one the other day hard to believe 3million Germans attacked. Oliviers voice over just adds something
Cos it makes you think Rainbow is going to startits an entirely minor thing, but the copy i'm watching starts every episode with the thames tv ident which i love for reasons i can't not work out...
My grandad had the book, we take it for granted now we can catch up if you miss an episode of out.Iirc they were shown on a Sunday at about 7pm when I was a kid.
After the Holocaust or ‘final reckoning’ episode we just sat there quietly for a few minutes.
Edit: likely to be episode 26 “Remember”.
Episode 20 is “Genocide”.
