I'll have to watch this stuff by him.It is very good but a lot of the Ken Burns stuff ( the war, civil war, Vietnam) is at least equally as good .
PBS are also running " the great war " at 9.40 most nights. Fantastic for those interested in that conflict .
Sorry to SEB . Ww1 doc is fantastic , lots of rare footage . Verdun last night had some stuff I had never seen from the battlefield
Off topic he did another about Jazz . A fantastic insight into the fact teenagers didn't start in the 60's. Big band swing was a massive youth culture .I'll have to watch this stuff by him.
This is a fantastic watch, narrated by the journalist who shot the footage. A must see, if you have not seen it mate.
I always loved that music. So dramatic along with the burning black and white pictures.Haunting theme music....
That is brilliant too. Also if you can the chance to watch the Apocalypse series by National Geographic (World War 1, World War 2, Verdun and The Cold War) they are excellentPBS are currently showing WW1 series and are about to start showing Vietnam series from next Monday onwards. Not sure if it's the Ken Burns one.
I'll have to look up that also.Off topic he did another about Jazz . A fantastic insight into the fact teenagers didn't start in the 60's. Big band swing was a massive youth culture .
It's very good.I'll have to look up that also.
Looking forward to watching it then. It's very good.
Olivier is amazing tbf, incredible what just a voice with authority and clarity can do.In my opinion the best ever. Laurence Olivier's voice over is superb. There were still enough people around who were present and so could comment. WW1 documentary that is on PBS at the moment is good. I am trying to watch some of the Ken Burns documentaries at the moment.
It IS Jimmy Stewart, isn’t it?ive had the world at war on in the background on & off whilst working from home these last few weeks. half listening to it in the background rather than intently watching it (having seen many times). on episode 12 this afternoon about bomber command - listening away thinking this yank talking about close bomber formation flying sounds like george bailey from 'its a wonderful life'...
aye, think there was a hint of sarcasm there. It IS Jimmy Stewart, isn’t it?

yep he certainly played his part, bit like Richard Todd. He landed on D-Day and was part of the force that took pegasus bridge, then played Major John Howard's role (taking the same bridge) for the Longest Day and was in Dambusters. Total legend, who is think also appears in TWAW.yeah... you forget that the war touched almost everyone, and that some (like stewart) had extraordinary lives beyond what they're mainly known for...

My parents were crazy about big band swing. They took me with them to concerts when I was little, but you couldn’t dance, which was a shame. I’ve always loved it ever since though.Off topic he did another about Jazz . A fantastic insight into the fact teenagers didn't start in the 60's. Big band swing was a massive youth culture .
Was in OSD about 3 years ago.I’m watching now about the fall of France episode 3 - the Ardennes and maginot line. As others have said Dear Larry is a fantastic narrator. It can be a hard watch if you watch a number of episodes - the holocaust one is horrific as is the one about the village in France that was slaughtered - Oradour Sur Glane
Yeah my dad was an older bloke would have been 100 now, I always liked the stuff he liked the swing , the crooners , the cafe Paris stuff ,My parents were crazy about big band swing. They took me with them to concerts when I was little, but you couldn’t dance, which was a shame. I’ve always loved it ever since though.
The photo of the the young lad in the opening titles third photo in, haunts me every time I watch it
and the last chord as the image burns out - chillsIt's the last image on the opening titles that has haunted me ever since I first saw the series in the 1970s.
