The use of the word "scum" for mags

Black and white bastards, barcodes, un-washed and skunks would have been the order of the day until as posted earlier, the media re-named them for us in 1990.

Bit daft us both calling each other scum like, not very imaginative. Still skunks for me though.

Nail on head. Zero resonance re. scum tag.

Fishpaste, don't be so pathetic. "very best and brightest" are you taking the piss? What a load of f***ing shite.

Not sure what is so pathetic about it. I was brought up in Newcastle. I was educated in Newcastle. Some of my oldest friends are Newcastle fans, including the best man at my wedding. I accept that they have a huge numpty element to their support, but who hasn't?

It's bred into you to hate the mags, vice versa on there behalf aswell. Each to their own marra but where some people maybe have a different persective to you is that is that we weren't brought up in newcastle, haven't got 'oldest friends' who are newcastle fans and certainly my best man is not a newcastle fan!lol My dad brought me up that way every derby day is us against 'them twats!' My dad will be standing with and supersleeves at sports direct arena and we will have a bloody good day.

i grew up calling them mags, a shortened version of magpies

we are generalized as mackems

so yes, i agree with you, generalizing them as "the scum" is out of order

even though i hate most of the barstewards

Utter bollocks. This only applies to those who are seriously lacking in parenting skills. I could almost feel sorry for those whose outlook is so inhibited that they have to instil their views onto the minds of their children.

Freedom, maan

and is what most mags call mackems

fuck's sake mate it's hardly original it's what every fan in the English speaking world calls their rivals. Same with scum. You and me and everyone else are scum to someone, same old shite gets trotted out everywhere on a weekly basis, it's like f***ing Tourette's.

If anything this particular word shows a lack of imagination. I've noticed on other boards that it is common for a team's supporters to refer to their rivals simply as 'the scum'.

Far better to aim a specific jibe at your rivals - you calling us the skunks or the barcodes, or us calling you the jamrags or whatever is more effective than the completely redundant 'scum'.

I agree with the skunk

skunks is unique - scum is just bollocks

Maggots is about as bad as gets from me. Not too many people I'd refer to as "scum" and certainly not based simply on allegiance to their football team.

No-one bred hating anyone into me but then I benefitted from parents who had something about them rather than small-minded idiots who, probably because of their inadequacies and lack of propsects in life, have football completely out of proportion and live their lives through a football club that doesn't give a damn if they live or die.

You can love your football club without feigning an extreme hatred for people who are really no different from you other than the team they support and the town they live in.

Tell me, who would you prefer the nurse at A&E who has a season ticket for Newcastle or the burglar who breaks into your house but who supports Sunderland? As if you can judge someone's character by the colour of their football scarf. Get some perspective.

I tend to say mags, skunks or those black and white bastards. I do say scum occasionally, but not very often.

My mag mates refer to us as scum so I could do likewise, but with my brothers and other family members supporting them it never feels 100% right somehow. Not in general conversation anyhow.

Derby day is different however.

Does Bateman say scum too?
