It might be because we are in the middle of a pandemic.
That aside. The knew they could not get the numbers they promised they would get, and obfuscated the whole system and "put out" the numbers they knew the public wanted to hear.
Every man and his dog knew that when audit time came(as it will again in the weeks and months to come) the numbers would not stack up. The only surprising thing is that some people are still willing to defend them.

I am just giving a balanced view and not looking for someone to blame when everyone is or should be pulling together.

Not surprised. There's a reason we don't generally see daily updates to statistical releases.

The amount of time it takes to collect and validate raw data means its not really viable without decent systems in place, and those systems don't come from nowhere.

The citizens have done nothing but pull together for three months. When will be the right time ? Because they are hoping that it all goes away you know. Time, and all that. Typical Boris tactic of Say Nowt and Saw Wood then just pass it off as "That was then, this is now". They should be made to give answers in The HoC now, Answers that can then then be referred back to when the great debate happens
