The system (part 3)

In this period of football history with this shower of shit on the books Im a 4231 man. But whatever system we use surely the players within that system need to be altered for the standard of opposition as well as the tactics within that system anarl?

Im a great believer in different teams for different teams if yernar what I mean. Away to Chelsea, City etc Id have Larsson wide right and Rodwell CM but at home to Watford & Villa etc Id start with Johnson and Giacci/Alvarez. etc.

FFS man riffraff you narnowt twat. Anyone in their right mind would start Gomez ahead of Roswell in a 4231 away to the top teams.

It did. Looked way out of touch with conditioning and the way that Dick asked them to play.
Looked Underprepared both physically and with respect to organisation. Perhaps Dick just miscalculated with the summer preparation. I expect he'll rectify it quickly but we looked a couple of weeks off the pace

Yeah I was shocked to find us totally out matched by the opposition looked like it was the first game in pre season to be honest. Big week in preparation for the Norwich game.

The lack of protection from cm just exacerbated the situation apart from the old captain cattermole problem
when given him the armband is like telling superman to inject kryptonite the rest of them looked like headless chickens . at what point does the club give up on Rodwell ? The failure to land fer or alternative atk cm is hurting Us

Rodwell is a bubble wrap player IMHO that is a player playing well within themselves as they are shit scarred of injury

I agree with Cattermole like. He shouldn't be captain. Not mentally strong enough, I like the bloke but he is mentally weak. This is seen from many examples when he has lost his head after a mistake etc.

Rodwell just shouldn't be playing if he is playing with that in mind. I have yet to see anything decent from him. Dick has been quoted in saying he wants far more from him. Let's see. Won't hold my breath like.

It's a different kind of mental weakness in Rodwell case one I believe is born out of his injury record ... People have suggested being over developed at Everton which has lead to certain weaknesses which has lead to his injuries

Watching him play his style is best described as being aimless ... He's not the box to box mid we were hoping for Seb tends to play that role

I hope we don't lash out huge funds on the striker. Would prefer it to go on a CM they fancy. Signed plenty of defenders but would love an excellent one through the door and Coates to be shown his place on the bench. Don't see that happening though

The problem is that Lens aside we aren't making measurable improvement when we bring a player in. People continually go on about "deadwood" on here and how we will be fine once it's been removed but what they aren't factoring in is that it's largely deadwood that replaces it....except it's nice shiny new deadwood.

It's a fair point. We are doing things on the cheap and trying to maximize value. I do think the players we have brought in are a slight improvement mind you. Kaboul and Lens are definitely an improvement. Matthews, jury out. Coates, not a fan and bench at best. Not a lot of work being done in reality. Need far more big signings. Have to wait and see. If it doesn't happen I can imagine the odds on dick walking would drop significantly.

Fair enough. I just don't see tactics as the issue. As I said before, if a message board can come up with solutions that an experienced international manager can't see during the game then he isn't the man for us.

IMHO - Having the same rabble as last season - that is the issue.

Dick talking about systems and players

DICK ADVOCAAT has hinted that systems, not signings, can help Sunderland bounce back from their opening day defeat at Leicester City.

The first game of the Premier League season left Advocaat with more questions than answers, although one outcome was that whatever the Black Cats did in pre-season was not good enough to stand up to the rigours of league football.

And while Sunderland lined up in their familiar 4-3-3 formation against the Foxes, Advocaat abandoned his tactics half an hour in and went 4-4-2, with Steven Fletcher alongside Jermain Defoe.

Both scored in the 4-2 defeat, which helped Sunderland's cause, and it has given Advocaat food for thought ahead of Sunderland's next match at home to Norwich City.

"With Defoe on his own it's not possible," said Advocaat. "If we do something we have to do it with a real striker there and not 4-3-3. It's not good enough.

"The second half was a little bit better with Defoe on his own, and having Fletcher (on the left) is a different story so maybe we have to change that."

Sunderland dabbled with two strikers when Defoe signed in January, but Advocaat has more or less stuck with 4-3-3 since replacing Gus Poyet in March. However, Defoe was isolated as Jeremain Lens and Adam Johnson were forced to track back as Sunderland came under attack from Leicester's flankers, and it has left the head coach searching for a Plan B.

With that in mind, Sunderland were yesterday linked with a bid for £14m-rated Jordan Rhodes, who has been the subject of interest from Middlesbrough for much of this summer.

However, Advocaat has insisted that the system, rather than the personnel, that needs attention.

"You can’t only buy players for £1m, £2m, £3m," said the Dutchman. "We have a president who is doing everything to help us, to help the team, and Saturday had nothing to do with the investment, the players were not in the right shape.

"It was the type of players. The majority of the players are the same, and they did really well at the end of the season as a team, as a unit, and hopefully we can learn something from this game. "First of all I was very disappointed with the whole team, not the defence, not the midfield, but we were not in the game and it gave me big concerns."

Sunderland's defeat at Leicester has placed the Black Cats under pressure ahead of their Canaries clash, but Advocaat is not too concerned about that.

He added: "There's pressure on every game. It was the case last year and this season it's the same. Hopefully everyone understands it, I'm not blaming the players, everyone was not there today. Slow, not sharp, not in the game."

This will change the entire team and how well it can play. It seems inevitablr to happen given dicks desire to get fer and mvila in. Just hope we dont fuck about too much and end up with no one. I trust dick..... and its not often i say that

Dave, see the northern echo article above. Sort of agreeing what you have said. Dick talking about systems etc

Nowt changing then. System still the issue. Can not blame the players now?
