Just back. First half hour good, last half hour to 45 minutes really good, but what was that in the middle? Just stuff happening for no real reason. Bizarre. Characters completely wasted.

Grumpy Old Luke is f***ing brilliant.

The First Order must be genuinely evil mind, Hux's Adjutant is Eddie Hitler.

Yoda cameo a proper punch the air moment.

What the fuck Leia? Why not just kill her off there, use her death as the macguffin to bring Luke back and work the story around that. How are they going to resolve this?

Benicio Del Torres' was completely wasted in a part that should have been Lando Calrissian really.

Spot on! Went with my 17yr old son last night and really enjoyed it. Thought it lost its way in the middle but pulled it back out of the bag I thought

Oh, ive just checked my Haynes Workshop Manual for the Falcon and it can carry 100 tons of cargo, so I don’t think carrying the entire remnants of the rebellion would be too much trouble. So there’s one plot gripe off here put to bed at least.

The reviews are ridiculous. You’ve got people giving it 1 and people giving it 10. How can people be so polarised?

I’m giving it an 8 btw.

The bad reviews all seem to have a theme mind...

“Destroyed the legacy”
“Ruined the characters”
“Sold out to Disney”

All comments based on comparing it with the previous films. I wonder what they would have said if it was a stand alone non SW film?
It isn't a stand alone film though, it's part of an overall arc in the Star Wars universe. They're using loved characters like Luke, Leia etc from the previous films you mention so it isn't that crazy to compare it to the previous films in the franchise that they were in.

I’m willing to bet that most of the haters are grown ups who’ve lost touch with what it would be like watching it as a 7 year old
Reading through the stuff on here again this morning, I’m now more than convinced that reliving this thru the eyes of my 9yo bairn is why I enjoyed it more than most...

Got to remember it's 40 years later aswell, aren't we all a little bit shitter than we were 40 years ago.

It's like trying to rediscover the magic of Christmas once you know Santa isn't real.

I loved TLJ and I loved the original trilogy, but the initial experience of the first 3 will never be recreated imo. Even if the films were actually better than the originals, the magic unfortunately won't be there as a grown man compared to my 5 year-old self:cry:

Some great CGI, but too much CGI bollocks. The AT-ATs, X-wings, tie fighters, space battles etc are all done superbly, but it’s the stuff like the casino scene and the way they seem to want to get as many CGI creatures and characters in as possible which is what I hated most about episodes 1-3.
That is a fair point, the force awakens got the cgi mix right - the casino scene was over done. I think the prequels have given this franchise an albatross round the neck when it comes to its cgi use, in comparison to some movies sadly.

I disagree - any bit with the millennium falcon in it had me enthralled just like it did all those years ago.

It’s what they did with the other characters that annoyed me. I mean Luke milking that tit man!!!

Whilst the Mary Poppins moment undid what would have been a great, dramatic send off, my biggest gripe is still with CGI Snoke. I can't think of any reason why he couldn't have been portrayed by an actor in make up. When he's interacting with Kylo Ren and Rey it just takes you straight out of it as you can see he's not real. Same with the casino scene and subsequent chase sequence: all too cartoony and Phantom Menace-esque and completely unnecessary.
I still enjoyed it, but it's things like this that can ruin movies, and one of the things that made Star Wars so memorable as a kid was the practical effects. Just compare the full sized Jabba puppet from Jedi to the awful CGI ones in the Special editions and prequels; there is none. Things like this jut annoy me.

I still get goose bumps when the music and the yellow story starts.

I no longer sit for hours trying to move the coffe table with the force though.

That was the magic for me, believing it.

I'm in for a second viewing at eleven, kids in tow this time.

The force. Same way rey and ren touched.

Luke sees that happening and neglects to mention it's a bit odd at any time afterwards. That might have helped later on.

Same with me on Monday with the kids. Have the pass so it might get a few more viewings throughout December

That it's a very bad STAR WARS rip off. If it wasn't called Star Wars it wouldn't be given the time of day. The fact it is unfortunately Star Wars is the only reason some people are defending it.

Thought it was class me, enjoyed all of the way through. A few daft bits but nothing that spoiled the film. The fight with ren and rey together against snokes men was good. A nice twist with luke being a force hologram, totally didn't see it coming. Don't know what they'll do with Carrie fisher now. I reckon the next one will begin with her funeral perhaps?

Thought that fight could've been better, could have used more of the force I reckon, as it was it was just a sword fight.

I built one mate (seriously ) you can’t get that many people on it unless there are only about 10 rebels left

That is why you fail

But people seem to have lost their minds here and their judgement is being clouded by what they were expecting vs what was actually delivered.

Look at the scores for the other films on IMDB ( my review in brackets)

E1 (pretty crap) 6.5
E2 (worst one) 6.6
E3 (best of the prequels ) 7.6
Rogue 1 (very good) 7.8
E4 (the best) 8.7
E5 (thinking man’s best) 8.8
E6 (film of two halves) 8.4
E7 (Decent, but a remake of 4) 8.1
E8 ( loved it) 8.0

Those scores make it the 5th best, which I would agree with. Yet a lot of reviews (including those on here) are calling it utter shit and giving it 1. Give it a while and repeated viewings and once the disappointment dust settles people will regard it as much better than they do now.
