The Super spoilery Star Wars : The Last Jedi spoilers thread *don't even put your mouse over it*

The success of the original 3 has very little to do with Mark Hamill's acting. The 2 best characters by a mile in the original 3 are Darth Vader & Han Solo. The best things about a lot of Luke's scenes are the sound, music & special effects, not Hamill's acting. I'd even put the said muppet ahead of Luke's character for being more memorable & possibly even the droids & the emperor
You're answering points I didn't even make there. And Hamill is not the problem with this film. Johnson is. Almost entirely so.

What a load of bollocks.

And it's nothing to do with wanting to feel 8 again. It's about seeing a Star Wars film that's faithful in spirit to the originals. A Star Wars film that is inescapably Star Wars. Watching this latest one was like watching a Pirates of the Caribbean meets Harry Potter crossover in space. Comparing it to anything like The Empire Strikes Back is insulting to The Empire Strikes Back.

There was a lot of twisting about Indiana Jones 4 but at least it felt like an Indiana Jones film. Let's just hope Disney never get their hands on that franchise.
Sounds like that inner angry 8 year old needs a hug there mate.

Posted this article on the other thread. Sums up why I’m conflicted about some of the stuff that happened but also why it was the right decision from Johnson to do what he did

What a load of shite that article is mind

The Force Awakens and Last Jedi are contradictions to each other on major plot points

Don’t mind twists but they have to be well thought out not cheap swerves

Snoke and Reys parents are massive issues that hang over an entertaining action film

Hopefully episode 9 makes this film better but I have about as much hope as the galaxy had with the resistance

Rey’s parents = maguffin

Rey’s parents = maguffin

And how she pulling off force shit with no prior knowledge like she did in episode 7

At least there was a gap between A New Hope and Empire when Luke was using the force to pull the lightsaber from the ice

Episode 7 she’s pulling shit she’s mind tricking people blocking out a trained force user

Episode 8 she’s being taught how to do this and we get that horrific reach out joke

No sense and a massive logic jump from what we have seen in the prior films

I think the point they're trying to make with Rey's parents and that kid with the rebel ring who picked his brush up with the force is that anyone can be a Jedi. And that'll lead on to Johnson's non-Skywalker trilogy.

Tbf that’s not Rian’s fault. JJ made her super force enabled in TFA , so she could hardly regress in TLJ could she? Anakin was born fully forced up in TPM - podracing etc. Some people are just born that way. Midichlorians, remember?

He's right though. When he says

Nail. Heed. Hammer.
Pirates of the Caribbean?

Much better on a second viewing plus a few more kids in the audience.

I think Hamill might get an Oscar nomination, along the lines of Johnny Depp in Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Luke mugs Kylo right off like :)

Hux is the worst General in Empire/First Order history. He's like the young twat who couldn't lead a raid on the fridge but is good at the admin so gets promoted way above his capabilities.

I think Cabbage's link sums it up nicely. Star Wars needs to evolve and grow.

Oh no... you could be right... and down the pan the entire thing goes.

JJ was a Star Wars nut who understood the universe. Johnson clearly doesn't.

I have no problem with Star Wars needing to evolve and grow. That isn't the problem with this film. There are however thousands of others.

The plot being the main one. For those that are saying this is a good film, go on then - defend that plot.

Watched it last night.

Far too long. Casino/Finn/Rose wa spointless and added fuck all to the story. Take that piece out and nothing changes. Suspect it’s only in because Benny del Toro will be in Ep9 and they needed to introduce him.

I kept thinking “oh this is a good way to end the film” when Dern smashes the ship, or when Luke died, etc but no there was always another hour, half hour to go. Far too long. I had CGI action fatigue by the end of it.

Couple of lovely scenes in it: the bit where Ren and Rey went back to back and started fighting the guards seriously gave me goose bumps. Thought that was going to be the start of a really interesting character development between the two of them - neither good nor evil, a bit of both. But then they just defaulted back to black and white. Disappointing.

I wonder how far into the editing they were when Fisher died, I’m sure by must have gone back and thought how can we kill her off here, but it was probably too late. Will be interesting to see how it’s dealt with. I do like the thought that the next film will be all about the new generation, especially with the little kid with the broom symbolising an untapped Jedi mass out there waiting to become rebels.

Generally ok. Didn’t mind the comedy. Glad it wasn’t just a ESB rehash. Not as good as TFA but then TFA was just a film that made me feel 7 again and this one was always going to be held to more scrutiny. Do love the new mix of diverse characters though and more women in strong roles.

Should have been about an hour shorter.

I just don’t understand how any true Star Wars fan didn’t enjoy it. Maybe if you were a highbrow cinema fan and were expecting Citizen Kane in space?
Let’s look at Episode 4. The story is a simple rescue the princess fairy tale. But you could drive a sand crawler through the plot holes. Yet we forgave all that and loved it cos it was different to anything else we’d seen before. It was 2 hours of escapism. And we loved the characters. And it was funny.
Now, 40 years later, here were are pulling the new one to pieces cos it’s full of plot holes and it’s funny?
It’s still 2 hours of escapism, with many of the same characters, but it’s now deemed shite cos we are grown ups and we are cynical and we’ve seen it alll before. We demand a more complicated story and better character development. Yes, it could have been better, but so could any film.
But I bet if you were a kid and had never seen a Star Wars film you would absolutely love it.
Nail on the head here.

I enjoyed it, thought it was a decent film. My 13 year old daughter said it was the best Star Wars film she has seen.

I avoided all trailers and hadn't read anything to do with the plot and was really excited to see the film.
I left feeling slightly disappointed and without the buzz that TFA gave me, but my 15 year old thought it was the best film in the whole series.
On reflection I've realised that despite saying I hoped it wasn't a rehash of Empire, that was exactly what I wanted it to be. I wanted to be a bairn again and I wanted to see my hero from being 5 years old come back and save the day with his lightsabre cutting through the baddies.
The whole film had a scene setting vibe to me and whilst it wasn't perfect and yes there were some daft bits, I think it will get better on viewing without the Luke Skywalker expectations.

When she mind tricks Daniel Craig with no training.

Much better on a second viewing plus a few more kids in the audience.

It was way better than TFA man

Nail on the head here.

And here we have the point the whole thread keeps missing. Ask kids for their reviews.
