The Summer rebuild.

Data is data is data, marra. It's available miles down into the pyramid. Finding players who do certain things better than others is always an advantage - regardless of where you are operating. All that changes is the money you spend. The principle remains the same. Identify the players who will do what you need them to do better than others and have a better success rate so that the clubs money goes further.

In your opinion would that extend to identifying players under contract at other clubs from the off?

Those who think the club are changing how they do things and those that think LJ deserves more time seem to be basing their suppositions on starting next season with a high press, younger and more athletic team with pace and energy. I don't think any fan would disagree with this aim but just how realistic is it?

From the snippets we've been fed there's a suggestion that the wage budget will be lower. There was also the statement by Johnson that there are players the club want to retain but can't afford to. If most clubs are using the data driven approach why would we get better results than them looking at the same data. In my opinion next season will see L1 stronger than any of our seasons down here. I'd expect Sheff Wed to mount a strong promotion push, Rotherham seem to be too good for L1 but not quite good enough for the Championship. Throw in Pompey, Ipswich, Charlton and the loser of the play off final and the top two places may take some achieving.

Question for those not as sceptical as I am but what makes you convinced that we can put a league winning team together from scratch with a reduced wage budget.
You have to scratch your head at some people who think we are going to bomb this league on the strength of finishing 4th this season. Especially, as our only young player who turned out a decent performance isn't even our man (Sanderson) and Embleton had to do it at another club and speaks volumes about our management.

To my eye we need the proverbial two year plan (3 transfer windows). Any money available for transfers should be ring-fenced to that plan as capital expenditure and that money only spent to buy/sign three marquee players in say 3 key positions per window. With the balance of the squad rounded out by youth and free transfers.

We need to lose Burge,Matthews,Mclaughlin,Hume,Power,Scowen,Mcgeady,Maguire ,Leadbetter,Wyke,Mcfadzean,Jones. Also i dont know if we are able to pay off undercontract players but if we can Obrien,Wright .The reset of the club must be done now or we are gonna be in the crap for a long time.

Most clubs in the lower divisions aren't using a full-on data approach because it's expensive. The wage bill at the start of the season was around £14m, but our limit under SCMP in the absence of parachute payments is going to be £4-5m less than that. In a funny way, the salary cap actually let us postpone some decisions because the highest paid players only counted for a fraction of their true cost. We'll still have a higher limit than anyone else, with the possible exception of Wednesday, who are a relegated team and get a higher percentage allowance, and also have ridiculously high ticket prices. We'll be buying players with potential at a fraction of the cost of the overpaid plodders we have currently. £5k/week will probably be a maximum, and that will outgun most other clubs. There are Lincoln players on under £1,500.

The other thing is that, even within the clubs using the data, not everyone is looking for the same things.

It's certainly plausible.
Wednesday are screwed as well mate. They aren't even paying their players wages and haven't filed accounts. correct me if the info is wrong. their ownership situation appears worrying

No, I think we all accept it will be a new direction, we're just musing on how it will pan out in practice.
I think our targets will be costing very little wage wise. Emphasis will be on their upside rather than where they are now.
I’m not sure how well some signings will go down initially. It’s going to ge a lot of people none of us will have heard of and there’ll certainly be some duds along the way too.

Sounds like a plan. My worry with that is how will supporters react to a 3 window plan in L1. Ultimately we're hamstrung by turnover (as are all the other clubs tbf) but if fans stay away turnover drops.

I'm pleased to hear that marra although I do recall us having a conversation regarding paying fees for players. In your opinion are we talking about Dobson sized fees, Wyke sized fees or heaven forbid Grigg sized fees....although an investment in a player like Sanderson might be well into 7 figures but could be seen as appropriate and a good investment. I guess you disagree on that point
Can Kyrils mam not just sponsor the stadium for £5 million a year?

She's in it purely for the profit allegedly.

If it's true we are reducing the wage bill then we are fucked. Why would do that with an owner richer than half of the premier league owners and FFP limit being dropped? Surely this is the perfect time to "buy" our way out of the league?

He will do though. Its been stated categorically that he has the final say on any player recruitment.

I think that's disingenuous.

And wasn't exactly what Speakman said.

As I said on an earlier post marra I can understand that approach when mistakes can cost you multi millions but when your market is 100 out of contract journeymen surely it would take half a dozen blokes with a few pizzas and a dvd player about 2 days to discuss and analyse them. If its kids from Europe or further afield then indeed you will need full data analysis but haway what can data tell you about Charlie Wyke that watching him a few times wouldn't. You know he's slow, you know he's not a target man and can't really play with his back to goal and you know that if you don't get crosses in he's largely ineffective....and most of those on that "selling platers" list are similarly exposed.

The system needs proving prior to scaling.

No one is saying this is the only way to go about things nor that it's foolproof.

It's just the absolute base that a football club our size should be using due to being 9 times out of 10 better than the old fashioned way, plus it enlarges the scope immeasurably.

Did you happen to read the continuance of your Barnsley thread the other day?

There's still a 60%/turnover limit apparently. The owner can make a share issue to increase turnover and he can buy players too. He can also spend on development without falling foul of the rules.
