Those who think the club are changing how they do things and those that think LJ deserves more time seem to be basing their suppositions on starting next season with a high press, younger and more athletic team with pace and energy. I don't think any fan would disagree with this aim but just how realistic is it?

From the snippets we've been fed there's a suggestion that the wage budget will be lower. There was also the statement by Johnson that there are players the club want to retain but can't afford to. If most clubs are using the data driven approach why would we get better results than them looking at the same data. In my opinion next season will see L1 stronger than any of our seasons down here. I'd expect Sheff Wed to mount a strong promotion push, Rotherham seem to be too good for L1 but not quite good enough for the Championship. Throw in Pompey, Ipswich, Charlton and the loser of the play off final and the top two places may take some achieving.

Question for those not as sceptical as I am but what makes you convinced that we can put a league winning team together from scratch with a reduced wage budget.

The wage bill will be lower because we will be playing all the kids and releasing a load of seniors Neil, embleton , hawks etc it’s the way forward IMO

Suppose that begs the question of whether they're good enough as Johnson didn't think any of those you've suggested were good enough this season.

Personally, I see the job as really difficult, the size of the task, the time that we have had to ready ourselves and the pond of players available to a league one side. Although my mate @The Cabbage is more optimistic so i'll go along with him.

Half the issue is at least trying for something that is likely to work. For far too long we have been a bit dumb in regards on how to run the club.

As for analytics, we're on the curve generally, although id hope the degree in which we are able to implement is well ahead of this league.

As for the league, I'm not fussed about any of those you mentioned other than Rotherham who have the characteristics to win this league and possibly Ipswich if they ever get themselves together. Any restrictions are likely to have more of a budgetary effect on those clubs than ours.

Not very mate seeing as we’ve been saying the same for roughly 10 years then always end up with plodders or seasoned pros.

This is the worry. As I say it could be a strong division next season with a fair few clubs who've been in the PL in recent years, have expectations of being better than this and don't normally stay long at this level.

I'm just unsure how we get this team when we have hardly anything to build on yet seem to think it can be done without money
"Data driven approach" is just another load of cock-babble imo.

@The Cabbage?

It’s not just that mate. The likes of Ipswich and Charlton have been taken over too, they’ll have a buzz and they’ll be in the same markets as us.

Is a good point about the data approach. Can't imagine there's a club in the country that doesn't utilise it.

Isn't there a financial dispensation for clubs dropping into this league though? I seem to recall it applied to us.

There might be however Im not 100% up on the rules after last season's fiasco. The rule with the cap meant they had a clear advantage, now I'm not sure.

Either way, I would be very surprised if we didn't have the highest wage budget in the league again.

Which in really simple terms means, if Speakman, Harvey and co get it right, we win the league.

coz he hasn't got a fukking clue what he is doing

Is that likely to change when he's given another set of players to coach who he also didn't pick. Johnson can only be evaluated on his coaching ability as he won't be identifying players directly. He can suggest positions and qualities but ultimately someone else finds that player for him.

You think our budget will be higher than Sheff Wed's?

Some of our fans seem to think we've stumbled on the holy grail with it yet clubs like Southampton have been using it for over 10 years.
It's far from it. Alone it means nothing, with the wrong people it can be just as harmful as we have been operating for the last 10 years.

So large potential upside, small downside.

There are many ways to use it also. It's a tool, whether a good one or a bad one depends on people.

Most clubs in the lower divisions aren't using a full-on data approach because it's expensive. The wage bill at the start of the season was around £14m, but our limit under SCMP in the absence of parachute payments is going to be £4-5m less than that. In a funny way, the salary cap actually let us postpone some decisions because the highest paid players only counted for a fraction of their true cost. We'll still have a higher limit than anyone else, with the possible exception of Wednesday, who are a relegated team and get a higher percentage allowance, and also have ridiculously high ticket prices. We'll be buying players with potential at a fraction of the cost of the overpaid plodders we have currently. £5k/week will probably be a maximum, and that will outgun most other clubs. There are Lincoln players on under £1,500.

The other thing is that, even within the clubs using the data, not everyone is looking for the same things.

It's certainly plausible.
