The squad is not weaker!

If they sign 2 fullbacks this week who are better than Power at RB and McFadzean at LB we will be considerably stronger imo.
Add a striker like Jebbison and a decent CB I’d be confident of winning promotion.

I think we have 2 players fro every position in midfield.

6: Evans, Winchester
8: O'Nien, Neil
10: Embleton, Gooch
7: prichard, AoB
11: McGeady, Diamond.

Now I know that AoB is one of those places and he has been pretty poor, but it is still the strongest position in our squad at the moment.

Full backs are a priority as we have none, then a centre half. We could also do with another striker as Will Grigg being so near to the starting lineup is worrying.

O’Nien aside, I’m really happy with the depth and balance there.

If Neil can take advantage of some game time and start to really develop, that midfield is good enough to finally get us out of this league

A squad with 1 striker and zero full backs can’t be stronger. That’s just the way it is.
We started last season With Wyke, Grigg and AOB with Graham joining in September.
This year we have Stewart, Grigg, AOB and Kimpioka. For my money, Stewart and Kimpioka are better than Wyke and Graham.

Here's our team for the first league game, last season:

Burge
Willis Wright Flanagan
O9 Dobson Power Hume
Maguire Grigg AOB

How anyone, looking at that line up, can say we're weaker is beyond me.

We’re not talking about opening day starting line ups - the thread is about squads and we are weaker. Fact

We have one senior keeper.

We don’t have a single full back on the books.

Our best defender was replaced with a very promising lad who hasn’t played a single senior game.

We let players go who contributed 70+ goals last season and have only brought in one attacking player - a midfielder

We let a 30 goal striker leave and have Will Grigg as his replacement in the squad

Our marquee signing is an injury prone journeyman

I’m not full of gloom - a few signings and we’ll piss this league.

But it is an undeniable fact that, as it stands, the squad is weaker now than last season

Might as well stick to it as it doesn’t seem like you know anything about football

A bit more than you I think :)

In numbers or quality?

You are massively pessimistic. We will.

McLaughlin was ok last season - would have kept him as cover if nothing else.
I don’t have a problem getting rid of him if we bring people in. Was nice that he could cover all across the defence. Guess we can only judge after the window shuts, but it isn’t looking great at the moment

I’ll explain why. Burge, Willis, Wright, Flanagan, O’Nien, Grigg and O’Brien still remain in the squad. Only we are without Willis, Wright is potentially on the way out, Grigg has failed here and the club want shot and O’Brien remains iffy.

Maguire has gone and has been replaced by a player who has had a whole host of problems and hasn’t featured throughout pre-season. A striker who scored 25 league goals and who we offered a contract to is no longer there and hasn’t been replaced and Hume hasn’t accepted a contract yet and has not featured in pre-season. We have no specialists full backs in the squad. None.

Aside from all that, surely the question is whether we are stronger now than at the end of the season. The team sheet you chose to compare to is very different to ones that were available from January onwards.

The fact that the manager very recently confessed to having sleepless nights, wanted at least 4 quality players and ideally 6, suggests that our squad isn’t as strong as it needs to be. It seems as if you are content to go in to the season with things as they are.

How anyone can be confident that things are looking rosy is equally beyond me.

Very possibility both. The fact we have no specialist full backs means that as things stand players will be there filling in. McLaughlan and Hume are better options to have at full back than two central midfielders.

I don’t think it can be said with any degree of certainty that Doyle will represent an improvement on Sanderson. We’ve yet to see him play against anyone in competitive football.

The central midfield area may be the one area where we are a bit better and might provide some optimism. Evans may represent an improvement on Scowen if he stays fit. O’Nien, quite remarkably given hes been here three seasons, is a bit of an unknown quantity in the centre of the park, as is Dan Neil, but they’re at least mobile. Pritchard may or may not be an improvement on Jones / Maguire depending on his fitness and mindset but again there’s very little certainty around his signing.

Up front we are, at present, undoubtedly weaker. We have the same options as we did minus a striker who got 25 league goals. So quality and depth is down.

I'd have him back probably, since we don't seem able to replace him.
I notice oglivie from Gillingham is still looking for a club as well. There's two league one standard full backs to at least give us a first 11...

Dobson
Obrien
Power
Grigg
🤮🤮🤮🤮
Replaced with
Evans
Embleton
Stewart
Neil
🤔🤔🤔🤔
I’m not saying the first 4 are good but none of the second bunch of 4 are close to remotely proven at thus level

There’s an argument to say Evans is but we’ve got to keep him fit enough to get on the pitch first.
