Luce (2019)

A child soldier from a war torn country is adopted by white American parents. He grows up to become an outstanding high school student, but he ends up in conflict with his history teacher who accuses him of harboring violent views on the basis on one of his essays.

One of those films watched on a whim that I had very little knowledge of and thought I'd give it a go on account of a quality cast and good reviews and I ended up being blown away by it. Excellent, complex story well directed with incredible acting from Naomi Watts, Tim Roth and Octavia Spencer as you'd expect, but Kevin Harrison Jr is the standout, both sympathetic and malevolent in equal measure.

Well worth a watch.

8/10

Hang 'em High - 10/10

Watched it on TCM last night. I always like to have a look at the film's IMdB page and browse through the actors that appear. Inger Stevens was only 35 when she died in 1970, two years after this film was released.

The Pyramid, run of the mill horror with Jay out of the Inbetweeners. Not the best acting but the story isn't actually too bad. Bit of the Descent mixed with the Mummy and several other films.

Looked at that, I’ll give it a go...

Midway (2020)

The fella who did Independence Day does a WW2 film. Touches on Pearl Harbour then on to the Battle of Midway.

Ham fisted script, cringe-worthy dialogue, I believe there is some historical events in there just drowned in cgi and jingoism.

Dinnar what I was thinking.

4/10

That itself should have been your first clue....

It’s shocking

Oldboy, the 2013 one.

Quite a few marvel people in this one. Thanos, Wanda Maximoff, nick fury. We'd watched another film recently with even more comic book people in. I can't remember what it was.

Anyway, 3/10. Pap.

Casino (1995), only seen it once before quite a few years ago. Not as good as goodfellas but still brilliant. 8/10

The Usual Suspects (1995), hasn’t seen this before. Must admit I found it to be very overrated. It was ok but average stuff really. 6/10

The Village of The Damned, 1960. A neat little sci-fi classic in spite of (and possibly because of) the nasty blond wigs the children wear. Based on The Midwich Cuckoos of course. I'd actually forgotten the ending.

Blade 2.

Had seen it before. Daft but enjoyable enough. Weird that Kris Kristofferson was in this. Snipes is cool. 6/10

The 3 Worlds of Gulliver - 1960

I've become quite fond of adventure/fantasy films made in that era. The plots and tropes are fun but considering technological advancements towards production were in its primitive days, seeing how they went about making these films to show otherworldly settings and creatures is interesting. A lot of it is dated when you're so used to CGI special effects of course but the acting makes up for it.

Black Fish

Documentary on Netflix about a killer whale at sea world that's killed several trainers. Very good and interesting watch. These majestic creatures should not be kept in tanks... 8/10

Drugstore Cowboy

Addicts Bob, his wife Diane and their two protégés rob chemists across America.

Still a stonewall Indie cinema classic. Dillon's finest hour and forty minutes.

8/10

Before I Wake
4/10

Shit. A fostered child’s dreams and nightmares appear in the real world when he sleeps.
Utter chod
