The Shawshank Redemption

My original point was that it is one of the all time greats despite flopping at the box office.

You metric for a great is that it has to have done well at the box office which is at odds with your distaste for imdb and their ilk.
Not at all.
Reread what I said earlier.

IMDBs top 15 includes a lot of major box office hits. That should be nowhere near a “best” of list.

“Best” is highly subjective and the only reason the majority of those movies (all made in the last 20 years or so) are on there is because the IMDB crowd clicked vote. It’s not hard to understand why I am dubious of anything like that, surely, when you see The Dark Knight Rises in there.

Shawshank wasn’t made for the IMDB crowd of today or yesterday.

I’m saying you said it couldn’t be the best fillum of all time as it flopped at the box office. Why is box office an indicator or good art?

You then refuse to accept a fillum is good based on an IMDb rating which is as you’ve said is not a good barometer as popularity is not always an indicator of quality but there is a large degree of contradiction there.

Loads of bands had albums that flopped which are now generally accepted as timeless classics. Beach Boys pet sounds being a good example.

 yet again, you’re literally putting words in my mouth.

Nowhere have I said a film can’t be good because of an IMDB barometer. I never even said Shawshank wasn’t good. But what I’m saying is, you’re all using this “it’s no.1 on IMDb” when no. 9 is The Dark Knight Rises. Surely anyone can see, that something isn’t right there!

Nowhere near.

If it was, it wouldn’t have completely flopped at the box office.
The movie "It's a Wonderful Life " also tanked at Cinemas. Finally getting some recognition winning Oscars. Considered one of the best movies EVER. Guess it's all about timing .

Best film ever made. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen it and I still enjoy it as much now as the first time I saw it.

Morgan Freeman.

Completetly agree. One of the finest pieces of cinema ever made. Simple and raw. One of those films that when its on, no matter where its up to I will watch it to the end. Reckon I have watched it 100 times.

Well that’s easy as I accept my top three are my personal favourites not what is “the best in the world ever”.

Jean De Florette
Black Swan
Rear Window
They’re all great films, miles better than Shawshank (which is - as you say - ok).
Will have to watch Jean De Florette again. Watched it at the time and fell in love with the lass.
Seen the other two a few times.
Need to watch Mother! again too. Was fun

Its not really raw though is it, highly produced and funded.
