For me, I think it's just the captions that pop up to tell you it's 3 months earlier/later that are annoying. They make you try and work out if it's before or after they've met/killed such-and-such. But if you just watch the scene, it quickly becomes quite obvious where you are in the story.

He was in a French film called A Prophet about 10 years ago about a young hoodlum who goes to prison and ends up taking over a whole criminal empire. Absolutely brilliant film
