Default seems to have been switched to 'Most Relevant'. Would it not be better to have it set to most recent (Makes it easier when starting a new thread to check for duplicates)

I hear where you are coming from, but the circumstantial evidence is very much that majority of people don't check for duplicates anyway. So the search is tuned for the default option of looking for the best matching content when people search for something.
Despite the name "Most Relevant", the search does still actually take into account when posts were made, and more recent posts are weighted to appear higher.
Obviously if you want to search for most recent, you still can from the Search Options - Ideally I would make this persistent as an option for each user, but there is not currently a way I can set/store this.
