The ref

Am I missing something about the pen? I was only half watching but it looked the blatant pen you'd see
It was!
That isn't how it works. Most good tackles are getting the ball first then the man. Doesn't mean it's a foul unless it excessive force. Otherwise no-one would ever be able to make a sliding tackle
Would Clarke still have got the ball even after he got the merest of touches? The answer is yes, therefore his contact on Clarke is a foul.
On the same tangent, was impressed by Millwall's commentary team. Called it largely down the line, and acknowledged the odd bit of bias.
Me too, thought they were excellent, admitting they were wrong a few times after seeing replay’s. Shows how tough a referees job is. For instance I feared the worst when I saw Bairstow’s challenge first time, they were calling for a red aswell, after seeing it from another angle it was clear it wasn’t a dangerous tackle and they admitted that.

Thought the ref was very good, he let the game flow as much as he could, especially the first half hour, let the strong fair tackles go and wasn't blowing up every other second....and whilst not a classic, the game was all the better for it.

They were very good on my stream, knowledgeable and very fair all round.

I don’t think the rule specifically says that if you get a touch on the ball it’s automatically not a foul. A slight touch on the ball whilst at the same time taking the players legs can still be a foul. That’s what the ref decided

Weird. The consensus on here appears to be that it was a pen. Over on the Millwall board they are up in arms about it.
That would be the same fans who claim that they don't care that nobody likes them, right?

< giggle > That includes refs I assume < /giggle >

They get the penna wrong, their lad gets a touch on the ball.

Usually id agree. Can't remember what match it was last week when VAR got involved and give the pen even though the player got a touch.

In today's game Clarke's was a certain pen. Clearly the faintest of touches on the ball doesn't matter anymore

Thought he done ok

One issue was when he let play go on for a while then gave Millwall a phantom free kick against Clarke a think

Strange
He did ok because he gave us stuff

The ones that don’t give us stuff are the shit ones

Did it ever? Has anyone actually read the laws of the game - because "getting the ball first" is not in them.

I don't care enough to read them to be honest pal. Today's game is soft as shite and for me if you make contact with the ball first you've won the ball

Well this isn't true tho is it ?

What tfk is "stuff". ?

Ok. So if you make contact with the ball then follow thru and break a players ankle ? Then what?

You'd have to ask our resident pair of ref defenders on here, but for me you have to take control of the ball or at least make the attacker lose control of the ball.

Clarke was still in charge of the ball even after the 10 degree deflection ... until he got felled.

This is precisely the problem . Football will become a non contact sport soon.

He didn’t tho. He tackled Clarke around the side, took the ball and then the player. It was a tackle plain and simple and the reason the ref had ‘a good game for once’ is because a very contentious decision went for us rather than against us.

Apart from the fact he didnt take the ball, he got the slightest nick on it. Taking the ball means to take it off someone.

To put it in more obvious terms, if there’s two players running through on goal neck and neck, an attacker and defender, the defender commits himself with a slide/last ditch lunge at the ball, gets the slightest touch and the ball continues to run but the attacker stays on his feet, retains possession of the ball, runs through and scores, would you still say the defender ‘took the ball’ or executed a ‘good tackle’? Of course you wouldn’t, there’s no difference in this scenario.
