The problem with warm up matches

interestinh article in the Cricket Paper this week (good read if you’ve never read it), about the poor quality of warm up matches these days. Applies in England too were division 2 counties rest their bowling attack against the tourist.

The solution: fly the new test countries to the country and play them. Ireland or Afghanistan would jump at the chance

What a good idea

Aye cos facing the likes of Kevin O'Brien and Boyd Rankin is very much like a hostile spell from Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Stark :-)

Maybe we need to return the favour by ensuring counties put out their 3rd XI for every tour game on the next Australian tour

Absolutely right. Id love to watch Durham playing touring sides but id probably go and watch an Ireland or Afghanistan versus whoever too

Also yes, the cricket paper is class

I was thinking about this too...would make more sense to play the Lions or an U23 XI than some of the warm-up matches we do get these days.

Also, play proper 4 day games rather than some of the 2 innings games we seem to play at the moment

I'e often thought they should play the Lions team in a proper first class game.

Hopefully teams touring England will stop off in Ireland for a test first in future. Afghanistan play their games in India anyway so would be good prep ahead of a series against India, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka
