The Perception of the MLS in England

MLS is decent, Yank football is not. Proper classist sport over there; just like horse riding here. Massively expensive soccer camps and shit which is a massive barrier for the kids taking part.

Being an American and a fan of football, I have been following the LAFC (Los Angeles Football Club) since talks first started of this team forming three years ago to this, their opening season. I have traveled to away matches in Portland, Seattle, and this weekend, San Jose and I have to say that the quality of play plus the passion of the fans has greatly improved in the past couple of years.
There's talk about how the MLS is looked at differently now in England as well, but I rather hear it direct from the source.... so has the perception of the MLS in England truly changed?

I was also at the San Jose game on Saturday night. Great game to watch apart from the result with LAFC scoring twice in the last couple of minutes to win 4-3. I watched the game from the LOBINA (Longest Out Door Bar in North America) behind the goal and I was really impressed with the LA support. It looked like more than 1,000 fans made the 350 mile journey North. They were loud and proud and not a single chorus of My Garden Shed. Looking forward to coming down for the San Jose game in LA in September. Interesting to see how it compares to watching games in Portland , probably the best place to watch an MLS game though I haven't been to ATlanta yet

It's still very young and still, as one or two have said, trying to get the balance between big names to get the crowds in and younger home developed players to get the league some sort of longevity. In that regard, it's way ahead of China and the Middle East though.

More generally, there's definitely a divide of some sort between old world football (northern/western Europe, South America, Mexico), medium world football (Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, maybe Israel, maybe north Africa and South Africa) and new wotld football (MLS, Japan, China, Australia, Middle East, South Korea etc.).

I do have to say that watching a match at the new Banc of California stadium is a lot of fun - great atmosphere.

And not sorry about winning the game;)

I wasn't too upset at losing to LAFC its the LA Galaxy I detest. Looking forward to the California Clasico at the end of the month
That is the real rivalry, though... the LAFC and Galaxy one is just starting out, but yours with theirs is deep rooted.

I went to a few Galaxy games because I used to live literally right down the street from what was then, the Home Depot Center, and needing to get a football match fix - but I never enjoyed it and I could never get behind the team. The LAFC have a different feeling about them - and I appreciate the fact that their motto is "Shoulder to Shoulder" and that they call themselves a "football" club and not a soccer club... lol

The thing is a lot of premier league games are dismal shite, 2 teams desperate not to get beat in bore draws. I think we had 2 or 3 off the belt against west brom.

It's easy to mock other leagues but fuck me ours can be beyond tedious at times..

So what, it's better than watching clowns.

I'm sorry to continue the common theme but whenever I've watched it on Sky Sports it doesn't look great.

Every team seems completely wide open to attack.

This is like asking an NFL forum what their perception of the Canadian Football League is...98% could give two shits.

I am not comparing it to the Premier League, but comparing the MLS and its fans a few years back to now; there's a huge difference. The fans are chanting, singing, and cheering for the entire game and it's truly a very fun and contagious environment. Football (soccer) is becoming a big thing here in America, and you can see it and feel it when you attend these matches or just walking around some of these cities. The advent of the LAFC is a good thing for the MLS and for Los Angeles, you see a lot of excitement about the team everywhere you go.

I watch most streamed games mate , its clear the atmosphere is class and the standard is getting better although has a while to go yet. The passion on the terraces is obvious , fooball ( soccer ) is obviously taking off big time in the states and from a UK viewing perspective its great because live MLS matches are screened late night over here when european games have ended , so the more football the better.

Here’s everything you need to know:

One of the most abysmal signings we ever made, a striker who has managed 2 goals in 50 odd premier league games, is one of the MLS top goalscorers.

Laughably shite.

Sky Sports News do a round-up of highlights of the games when they've been on and the presenters are practically taking the piss out of how bad it is.
That is rich coming from a sunderland supporter mind , it certainly isn't either and a damn site better atmosphere at all the games than we have seen for a couple of years.

Watched a few games of it.

Was one in particular where I think ‘Giovinco?’ bossed everyone. Been told he does this most weeks?

I’ve never seen a player control a game of football with so little effort

Now I think on it was actually a good laugh

I’m in, up the MLS

I will say he also tore up the Eredivisie, which we give a little bit more respect to than MLS. I'm all for it, games in the summer and late nights, often with some names you've forgotten about.

Like our lasses game. Completely fake teams set up for the highest bidder, rather than just allowing it to develop naturally with the 'actual' best teams
