The pens taken at Charlton end

Presume it was so the police could separate the pitch at the halfway line.

They could stop a Doncaster pitch invasion but not a Charlton one so didn't want the Charlton fans flocking to and congregating near the away end if they won.

Probably did actually. They all came on the pitch but celebrated at their end and the police formed a line.

If it had been the other end you would have had 10k Charlton fans running to meters from the away fans to celebrate with their players
In that case the ground isn’t fit to host a match. That incidental factor could have changed the entire course of the play offs. It’s not Doncaster Rovers fault that Charlton fans would go on like animals and celebrate like they had just won the premier league.

Exactly it’s the same scenario at any ground in the country (other than those that have the away fans alongside the pitch rather than behind the goal). All of these other teams manage to host a penalty shoot out with proper procedure followed.

Basically the police invited the scenes at the end.

Aston Villa - West Brom decided on Penalties at the Hawthorns (not too dissimilar to the Valley) and they still tossed a coin to decide which end...and that was a local derby!!!

Shouldn't be a factor when deciding which end to take pens

With that logic, do the police and safety officer tell the ref to blow his whistle while the ball is down the opposite end of the pitch to the away fans in, say for example, a final day relegation decider...just in case the fans decide to invade the pitch - can't have them running to celebrate with their players metres away from the away fans!

It sums up how out of touch the EFL are, it’s pretty embarrassing and as you infer could lead to a dangerous precedent.

It's got fuck all to do with the EFL. It's the police match commanders decision.

I agree it's ridiculous but the police obviously made the decision in light of the resource they had.

Camera went on the Doncaster keeper just b4 the shoot out started you could hear him say 'bollocks' to the ref . Very poor decision.

So had Doncaster git a penalty during the game at that end would the police have intervened and made them take it at the other end. Thousands of fan's on the pitch at the end made a mockery of any decision

Rules are rules and are there for a reason, every one knows them, everyone should abide by them. The rules were broken, irrespective of who made the decision. If it was for safety reasons the authorities should have been aware beforehand. Judging by the Doncaster captains response, he certainly wasn’t. They then had the nerve to toss for who goes first and Charlton won that as well. Anyone saying it doesn’t make a difference which end they are taken, is also talking shite, otherwise why have the toss up in first place. Of course it doesn’t always work out that way. If the Police thought it was unsafe, that should have also been communicated beforehand, the fact that a Charlton official escorted the police to the ref and did most of the talking would suggest that it is obviously a joint decision. They should have had legitimate reason for choosing that end and that should be conveyed to the EFL before the chance of any shoot out took place. Why should Rovers suffer if Charlton couldn’t afford to police it properly or the police couldn’t be arsed. It’s all supposition at the moment because we don’t know what the safety reasons are, unless I’ve missed something, but it should be investigated
