The Model Works

It has always been made clear, many times, that losing players is something that we must get used to and that there is nothing to worry about because there is always a plan of succession in place. The model is designed with sustainability in mind and we have been told that succession planning is in place for when members of staff move on which will enable us to continue to progress despite the prospect of a high churn of key staff and players. In fairness we have already seen it in action and it delivered when Alex Neil unexpectedly left to join Stoke. In previous years, that would have prompted immediate crisis but succession planning kicked in, Tony Mowbray was quickly appointed and we carried on with minimum disruption to enjoy a season that exceeded all expectations following promotion. I know that it is a lot easier when it comes to appointing a new Head Coach, particularly one who was out of work at the time and living on our doorstep, than it is to replace departing players and getting deals done particularly at this late stage of the window is going to be a real challenge for Speakman and the recruitment team. The way we have recruited has rightly bought Speakman trust and time but it will be interesting to see how much faith and patience supporters will have in this approach moving forward and I feel that this could be a really seminal day.

The model is supposed to work by having players ready to move seemlessly into the place of the player sold. Who is seemlessly moving into Ross’s place , who would replace Roberts if he left ? The players who we brought in to do this have not been good enough or are nowhere near ready .
If I could like this post more than once I would.

So how do you expect us to get into the PL if the object is to sell on the players you mentioned? We're a football club, not a market stall " Buy 'em cheap and sell 'em quick "
Exclude LND since the current regime had nowt to do with his signing.

I don't know about you but I follow Sunderland to watch exciting players without worrying that they all have a For Sale sign on their backs and can go the second a profit can be made.

We might as well have Purple Bricks as our next shirt sponsor.

If our football club wants to be succesful, it has to sell at a profit, while it may not feel particularly great or normal due to us never being able to do so before, if replacements are done correctly this will be just our first second step forward.

The model we are going for is based on what brighton have achieved. Look how they handle their player sales; Cucurella left and estupinian was ready to step in. Trossard was sold and mitoma was ready to step in.

They've sold Caicedo and Mac Allistair this window and have brought in carlos baleba (£27m) and Mahmoud Dahoud (free from Dortmund). to immediately replace them. We're yet to see how good these are going to be for Brighton - but the point is these players were all there as soon as the players were sold.

Today is crucial for us to replace anyone who leaves with equal quality or better, otherwise the model is not working and we will not progress. Lovely profit, but no progression.

Put it in context and you can get to fuck any other way.

Say it again for the people at the back. You don’t sell your best players if you can help it.

The sale of Henderson and Bent and Cana, and then Gyan… was the ultimate start of our descent into L1.

We probably won’t get relegated again this year, but we’re going that way.

Fuck this, honestly fuck it
Very good post.
Am I the only one who thinks there is no fxxxxxg "model" . It's cheap and might turn a profit. Thats why they are doing it And like the season card fiasco shows contempt for supporters. You don't sell your best players and especially not your experienced goal scorer. In last seasons play off semi Luton who get gates of 10000 beat us easily. Should that have been a wake up call to the club.

The time to ask will be in another 2-3 years imo. Average age should be at around the 25-26 mark as opposed to 21-22 as it is currently, with a greater volume and nucleaus of good players. Yes some will leave that we don't want to but the critical mass of talent across the squad will have increased.

Thats quite a bold statement to be confident of.

When wages arent competitive then i dont think its something you can be so confident of.

The football pyramid know we dont pay well so can cherry pick whenever they want! Could easily see us standing still / going backwards with the quality tbh

Didn't say I was confident. I said the time to ask will be in 2-3 years.

Made £9m+ on Stewart
Might make £5m on Roberts

Neither were in the squad at the weekend and we got a draw against a team how’ve spent huge and are expected to be top 6 minimum.

Will make future profits on Clarke, Hume, Ballard, Cirkin, Bellingham, Ekwah, Patterson, Rigg, Neil etc.

Still time for some additions and a more than capable manager at the helm.

Might not be the quick fire progress some are looking for but it’s a healthy way to run a club and a business.
then we will have no team,
terrible way to look at things.

So, our success is now based on buying players cheap in the hope we can make a profit on them and not on ambition to win trophies and/or promotion?

What happens if we have a succession of players who don't make the grade and turn out to be duds?

As another poster pointed out, now that we show what our 'model' is, clubs will ensure there's a healthy sell on clause for them.

I'm not disagreeing or arguing with anyone's points, but the reality is we have players like LND, Roberts, Clarke, Ekwah etc only until someone stumps up cash for them. I want to see them play for us, without knowing the plan is to sell them for a quick profit rather than build a team around them.

Working for KLD'S bank balance that's for sure.

Sorry but a good business model does not turn down £15m in profit now when they could potentially get £0 in 9 months time.
Now let’s say they didn’t make that 15 million profit but instead invested some more good quality merchandise, this merchandise grew this business to say a higher division making more profit in the long run? Would a good business not do that.

Speculate to accumulate.

And there we have some fans ambitions in a nutshell.
Balance sheet trophy heading to Wearside
I don’t get it all. If you check my posts from last January I was critical of the model and said you won’t be so happy when we’ve sold Stewart and roberts and you can imagine the grief I got, now it looks possible on the last day of the window and I’m reading the same posters making arguments for why it’s a good thing, Stewart’s a crock etc. roberts has 1 good game in 5 etc. it’s unbelievable

it also only works, it you have better players filling the spots.
do we have anybody better then Stewart and Roberts ready to start on Saturday?????

it's a joke.

We need a new owner (again!!). So disappointed that the 2 steps forward we made last year will just be piss in the wind and we will not kick on. All it needed was an owner with a pair of balls ready to put some money in to get us promoted.
well, hello again league one. it was nice not seeing you for a few years.

That would work -time will tell I suppose on “ new “ incomings
This Crespo lad ( if true ?) seems decent
