The Model Works

Get in! This is why I love the model. The football is mostly incidental for me - I am so glad that KLD is getting rich of player sales so late in the window. The transfer window, specifically the last two days, are why I follow Sunderland. It's great to see the club turn a profit. Balance sheet is looking excellent. Long may we buy cheap, sell high. These are the results that matter, trading players

The model is supposed to work by having players ready to move seemlessly into the place of the player sold. Who is seemlessly moving into Ross’s place , who would replace Roberts if he left ? The players who we brought in to do this have not been good enough or are nowhere near ready .

In a nutshell. We've made absolutely no progress on any forward back up and had to move some on already, with the rest so far not looking up to standard. Contracts may be forcing our hand here, but it amounts to selling your better players not any such model - anyone can do that.

You've said exactly what I've been trying to say but better. The intent is there but the practical reality is that the replacements haven't kicked on.

Made £9m+ on Stewart
Might make £5m on Roberts

Neither were in the squad at the weekend and we got a draw against a team how’ve spent huge and are expected to be top 6 minimum.

Will make future profits on Clarke, Hume, Ballard, Cirkin, Bellingham, Ekwah, Patterson, Rigg, Neil etc.

Still time for some additions and a more than capable manager at the helm.

Might not be the quick fire progress some are looking for but it’s a healthy way to run a club and a business.
I'll enjoy reading @Grumpy Old Man analyzing the balance sheet while I read the Financial Times on Saturday afternoon in the South Stand. Headlines "Sunderland Most Sustainable Club in League One". Sorry for dragging you into this Grumpy.

So, because we got a 0-0 at Coventry, selling Roberts is good business?

Roberts scored 5 and had 7 assists last season so, him and Stewart with his 11 goals is a decent chunk gone and that's without Amad's 22 goal contributions. Even taking into account they'll have contributed to each other's goals, you're probably looking at 30-35 of our 68 last season.

Also, clubs now know we are desperate for goal threat with hours of the window left. How can that be a positive situation?

Get in. We’ve won the balance sheet trophy. Who needs actual success when you’re a football fan.

So at the moment the replacement for Stewart is a 20 year old rookie who has played a about 90 minutes of competetive football in his life and has been completely bullied out of gamesand never scored a goal & the replacement for Roberts, can't cross a ball, tackle, shoot of pick out a pass

Yep its working
Where’s the succession planning that Speakman was on about? Another lie, the model is just a bluff for making money
Window is not over and we have 2 forwards and Bennette who need games. Amad, Clarke, Cirkin, Hume weren’t pulling up trees without a decent run of games in the first team.

This is the problem we have a section of the fan base who are more bothered about being sustainable, i just want to see the best possible version of Sunderland, whats going on atm is not enjoyable.
It can work both ways. We just seem to have this almost ideological purity around the model now though.

Commitment to the cause regardless of he reality.

The fact that players signed to step in seamlessly when their seniors leave haven't processed means we need a change of plan when those seniors do leave, their replacements aren't ready either. Who is going to lead from the front?

It's not a healthy way to run the club if we regress badly this year and potentially lose a not insignificant portion of our support next season.

Flogging your best players and bringing in people who aren't near that standard is a model for stagnation. There's unbelievable pressure on replacing Ross and Gooch (maybe Roberts?!) tomorrow with players who can hit the ground running.

Losing Stewart, Gooch and potentially Roberts within the space of 24 hours will likely make all the rest of the experienced players want to leave as well. That is a huge downside.
