Whats the area around Kilburn Park tube like? I've been offered a canny deal on a hotel in the area, but I've been told its a shithole

Are you coming for work or pleasure? Where do you need to get to when you're in London? Kilburn is a fairly average area: it's not posh/smart and it's not as awful as some places. On the eastern side of Kilburn High Rd you have roads leading up the hill to West Hampstead, which is very nice.

Pleasure mate. The hotel I've been offered is the Marriott which claims to be in 'Maida Vale'

there is a f***ing great pizza place on kilburn high street

If it's a good price I would say go for it. You'll have the slight inconvenience of having to get the tube into the west end, although as someone has said Regent's Park is walkable. It's also a bit of "real" London: I lived in West Hampstead for a while and loved it.
