The lifesaving food 90% aren’t eating enough of

    I've been trying to take a bit more interest in it but there's that much conflicting/restrictive stuff on it I get bored and go back to eating loadsa pasta n that n drinking beer.

    I know what you mean. A lot of the advice given seems to be pretty restrictive...

  5. Started trying to up my intake a while back when Dr Michael Mosley did a show about prebiotics, specifically inulin. Bought a bag of it and try to add it to a tea or coffee each morning.

    I find it hard to reach the recommended amount of fibre each day so I’ve supplemented with psyllium husk powder.

    That vegan sausage roll probably does!

    Switch to wholemeal pasta, bread and rice. That'll make a massive difference.

    Now I'm eating more fibre, I'm taking a probiotic pill every day too - just to help rebuild my gut.

    I'm one of those people who had antibiotics thrown at them year on year (for years as a kid, misdiagnosed - actually had heyfever, not a cold - back in the days when kids were given penicillin for everything), then as a teen for acne - month after month of various antibiotics to help that (didn't work, ended up taking Accutane/Isotretinoin, which did work), and then loads of chest infections over the years. So its a good bet my gut bacteria is skewed horribly. I crave sugar like mad.

    Can't say I'm overly keen on wholemeal pasta (it's the texture) and wholemeal rice is rank. I do like wholemeal bread though.

    I still like to follow a sort of 'everything in moderation' philosophy, though not without certain excesses. :lol:

    Find a relative with a good bowel, put their dump into a blender, mix it with water and drink it. Or somehow have it inserted up your rectum. Hmm, the story was last April.:lol:

    Yeah, I've been the same in the past - tried it, fucked it off. Same with the bread as you as it happens.

    I'm going to give it another try though.

  15. I’m in a similar boat, years and years of antibiotics for acne (which never helped at all, I wish my GP had just let me have accutane earlier as that actually cured the problem). I’ve had acid reflux for years and I don’t think my gut flora is right after the years of antibiotics and then a couple of years of PPIs.

    Fortunately just had a fundoplication so I’m hoping getting off the PPIs and onto probiotics / prebiotics will help.

    I’d strongly recommend inulin if you’re taking probiotics as it essentially feeds the bacteria, it can make you a bit gassy to begin with though.

    I also know people who have sworn by this product: www.symprove.com for IBS, allegedly its more effective at getting the bacteria to the gut alive.

    You should be getting most if not all of your fibre from fruit and veg. Just watched the BBC news and while they're reporting this story, they're showing pictures of brown stuff - bread and cereal mainly. No vegetables of fruit in sight. It's shocking.
