The high press

Wasn't thus what Ross said he was trying to dee obviously failed
From early season, Ross did use the high press, which served us very well, but he'd abandoned the system by Christmas of last season, and we never again, looked like a team full of goals and attacking intent, during his remaining time at SAFC.
He tried using wing backs in the early part of this season, but we looked a shambles at the back, and he discontinued with the wing backs.
Credit to PP for his dogged persistence, and the high press, using wing backs, is once again reaping rewards.

No disrespect to anyone intended here but most teams in this division can’t live with us when we play like that. High press, don’t give them time at all. A lot of teams will gift us goals like Rochdale and Lincoln have.

There are obviously a few better sides in the division where we won’t be able to play like that, so our tactics need to be robust enough to be able to adapt.

Some good articles on it. You need to coach it a lot - especially shape when pressing and when you fall back aswell as when to do those things. Also goes without saying you obviously need players who are fit and mobile. If Ross was a fan of it then he seemed to like slow immobile players a bit too much for it to work 😁

Tbf Wyke, Gooch and Maguire all played under Ross.

Joy to behold isn’t it, Rochdale never, ever looked comfortable last night. Parky is spot on adopting this tactic, I know it’s his natural style anyway but we all know that we’re an impatient bunch. This “up and at em” style suits us perfectly, the players don’t get nervous trying implement tactics that the fans end up grumbling over when things get overly ponderous, as they often did with Ross.

Massive respeck to PP for being bloody minded and ballsy enough to stick to his principles and turn things around. Dec 26th feels like a hell of a long time ago already.
Last season / under Ross we conceded many a goal from pressure from wide. From full backs and wingers/ wide midfielders. This system has our wingers pressuring the fullbacks and the wing backs pressuring the midfielders immediately and we're so much more safe defensively but also we attack from higher up the field and if it breaks down we are less vulnerable. Its not rocket science - somehow Ross didn't work this out week in week out.

They didn't help themselves by inviting it on every time their keeper got the ball. I'm all for playing it out from the back, but they had no direction and their players looked uncomfortable attempting to do it. They looked so poor.
This, 2/3 times in the opening 5 minutes they could hardly get out of their box.
It just handed the impetus to us and the crowd knew that....from then on it was only a matter if time until the goals came.
