The happy clappers have had their time

Interesting thread. Big club mantra. Seen us out of prem for 16 years. Only way to deal with it is switch off. I only watch teams in our division. Had no interest in PL or championship if we weren't in it. Seen us win the big one and that's enough for me.

Follow your club, even if it is Carlisle away and sod the noise. We are fans of our clubs not football. Once you realise that the pain isn't so bad.

Second Division club and a set of cheating bastards to boot.

Forest anarl while we're at it, except for the cheating part.
Since being relegated for the first time in 1958, Sunderland have spent 31 seasons in Division 2, 5 seasons in Division 3 and 29 seasons in Division 1.
What does that make us?

It's 30 in the top flight, 32 in the second, and 5 in the third. The swing between the top and second flight has only just recently occurred.

And of course that's only since that first relegation. So you're ruling out about 60 years of league football give or take a couple of World Wars.
A yo-yo club
Emphasis on the Yo of late.

It’s actually mental how many people who claim to be Sunderland fans find anything and everything to moan about.

We’re pretty much guaranteed a playoff place and promotion is very much a possibility.

Why can’t people just enjoy this period and the fact we have a very promising young side?
Agree fully. Would have taken guaranteed playoffs at the start of the season. The form is worrying but that can turn around with a few good results. I fully expect us to make the playoff final. That in itself is a great achievement.

Form will change a lot between now and then, we might hit a few games of wins and get that confidence back. You just cant accurately predict this league its mayhem (bar the prem teams usually being in top 8 due to the money)
I would agree myself if there were things to be positive about right now. The team is going backwards, home games are a chore again, we didn’t bother in January and we are looking very likely to be spending about a decade outside of the top flight.

It’s not like we are in the top 2, or in the PL fighting for a European spot and people are being negative. The negativity is a reflection of us going backwards again.
If we were offered more or less guaranteed playoffs at the start of the season most wouldve taken it. The players are desperate for a rest and are out of form. See how we go after thr break.

We are not going backwards again, we are in the best state we have been since relegation. We signed the striker on a permanent that everyone was clamouring for and we somehow managed to loan a 25m plus player from roma. Its easy to say going backwards based on a short term run of games but not many teams continue on a constant upwards trajectory through a whole season

"our fanbase is infested with apathetic mouth-breathers who couldn't give a fuck if we were relegated the next 7 seasons"
That bit NO ONE is happy with getting relegated just because he don't have a complete meltdown because the scum have won a cup doesn't mean we're happy to be relegated
The since KLD has came in we have progressed massively both on and off the pitch just because it's not instant doesn't mean it isn't happening if you can't see that's you've got something serious wrong with you

Sounds like you're one of those people absolutely fine with never-ending mediocrity to be perfectly honest. You're part of the problem.

Good post.

Mind 9 times out of ten when ive watched an ‘elite’ prem game its been fecking dross!

Where have I said I fine with mediocrity you absolute weapon just because I know you can't have instant success? It's called building the club up from the shambles SD and CM left us in.
Are you disagreeing what we haven't improved leaps and bounds since KLD brought the club?

6 times champions of England, 2 time FA cup winners, 10th in the overall top flight table, let’s start acting like it. Owners, directors, coaches, players & fans. What we’re currently seeing isn’t good enough and it’s incumbent on us all to sort the fucker out.

Alternatively: win fuck all in 50 plus years and before then for another 35 years so let’s keep acting like it eh?

I’m not a ‘happy clapper’ btw. I long since stopped going, never mind clapping, but way before that determined that clapping, complaining, cheering or booing makes not a jot of difference. The only option is to give up. And the only difference that makes is to oneself. Which is, in the vast scheme of things, fine and dandy.

That’s not entirely true is it? When we got relegated loads were trying to justify it and actually looking forward to it “I’m happy we’re going down it will give us a clean slate and we will come straight back up again”

More apathetic bollocks to follow as we were relegated again and 8 years later are still not back in the top flight. You can say we’re kicking off because of the mags game all you want, I’m just fed up of mediocre shit tbh

But how is he the problem? whether you agree or disagree with his view, how in any possible way does that affect how an owner runs a club?

Thats the one thing im not getting with this thread, how does how a fan support a club make any difference at all?

Read the first 15 pages or so. Think the OP makes some fair points that are lost amongst a load of 'I've got more loyalty points than you' shite.

I agree we need to get over the parachute payment issue. No doubt it is a massive disadvantage - iirc two of the three promoted clubs have had parachute payments in each of the past 8-9 seasons - but if we take the view that we will never be able to compete with the parachute clubs then we will never ever get promoted and the absolute ceiling of our ambition will only ever be a shot at the Championship play offs. Don't think it is massively demanding to eventually aspire to/expect more.

I agree we are generally very placid and should have been more demanding when we were in the Prem - there was an attitude within the club that they could afford to be extremely complacent because nobody would ask questions as long as we stayed up and beat the Mags.

But Ellis Short and Madrox are long gone and we've progressed massively under KLD. He is far from faultless and I'm generally Indifferent to him but 'the longest spell out of the top flight in history' is completely irrelevant given he's delivered promotion from League One and two Championship promotion challenges in four full seasons (including this one).

I agree there will come a point where we really need to see progression towards becoming automatic promotion challengers/favourites and top 6 won't fly forever. But we haven't reached that point yet.

Also don't understand what the OP wants us to do anyway? RAWA to tell the club it isn't acceptable? So what - what happens then? Boycott if we don't go up? More strongly worded letters? It's a meaningless statement/gesture.

Imo anyway.

I said since first relegation in 1958.
Which suggests I wasn't ruling it out.
Sunderland had 57 consecutive seasons in Division 1.
Making a comparison between those times and the last 67 years.

I could understand if we weren't competing at the moment, yes we have had a dip in form, it happens.

How many teams are in English league football, we cant all be winning cups and in the top league.

What I expect is my team that I follow to compete, I have seen us more than once not turning up, thats hard to swallow, but this season I have seen us competing with teams with an advantage due to the extra payments and we are 4th. Its above what I was expecting this season.

If we fail to go up I will be expecting to compete at the very top of the league, as I would be expecting us to kick on again.

i was only a kid, but Alan Durban was from what my uncle explained putting together a half decent young team, we gambled and lost big time and saw the team dismantled and end up in the 3rd tier, careful what you wish for. I will take this slow steady improvement, than some of the knee jerks I have seen in the past.

What are you talking about? When people can see it, warn of it and get ignored then of course they are going to say I told you so. It doesn’t make them happy about.

The second we dropped out of the top 2 I posted on here that we wouldn’t find ourselves back. I was spot on, because the signs were there, but I’m f***ing gutted about it.

When our January window fizzled into nothing, people said we would go backwards. We have. Nobody it desperate to say they told you so. They’re gutted.

Just because someone can see the flaws and point out the flaws does not mean they are dying to say I told you so.

I know for a fine fact we won’t get promoted this season. We don’t have the mentality. You have been able to see it with your own eyes for months. Would I love to proved completely wrong? Absolutely.
I’m not gutted. Throughly enjoyed 2 of the last three seasons thanks.
