If you believe that you are a fool, please tell me the first time you heard the term makem? Before that it was mak n taks, geordies taking the piss out of the Sunderland accent. I am a Durham lad, when I was born Sunderland was in County Durham, I am what you describe as a 'pit yacker'. You are insulting a large percentage of supporters who attend SAFC matches and at the same time accepting a geordie insult and wearing it as a badge of honour. What a wanker you are!

FTM.
Knows.
I used to drink in newcastle city centre from 1976 to 1982, the first time I ever heard the word mackem was in 1982 when some mag found out I was from Sunderland. He shout "your a Mackem" I said a what, he said a Mackem and tackem followed by wheez keez a theez. The first time I heard someone from Sunderland call themselves a Mackem was at Roker Park, the last night time game ever there when we played Southampton in 1999. The crowd were singing a song about being Geordies and he started shouting "we're not Geordies were Mackem".
It makes me sad now when young people think being called a Mackem is a compliment.
This is bollocks, people need to stop stating it as fact. From the age of 4 (in 1979) I was instructed by my Grandfather "never let anyone call you a geordie Son. You're a Mackem and make sure you tell them that"
Bollox. Never happened.

I have never and never will accept being called a makem, most times when I tell people I am not a geordie, and that I support Sunderland, they say your a makem then? I tell them I am a proud Durham lad and support Sunderland and that the term 'makem' is an insult, not only to me but to the proud people of Sunderland. It f***ing creases me why people accept it.

You haven’t got a clue. If you’d been born and gone matches in 60’s and 70’s it was all ‘Geordie aggro’. I travelled with John Tennick and the official supporters club from his Dundas Street shop, all the buses lined up on a Friday night for a 12 o clock start. Near where Jackson’s is now.
Very true. My old man worked in the Shipyards and he heard it there in the 70s IIRC.

Spread to the footy crowds in the 80s and definitely in the early 90s when the Jawdee Nashun became a thing.

You are right in what you are saying there, to the sound of Gary Glitter

All my life. Was born in the 70s. If you don’t like it don’t support our team.

FFS

Born in Sunderland to a family from Houghton, now live 250 miles away and still make over 20 games a season.

Our attendances would be v poor if it was limited to folk from Sunderland but it’s very kind of you to let us support your club🙄
It’s you having a pop at Sunderland here marra.

People who are not Mackems who have a problem with Mackems and the fact that SAFC is Sunderland’s team…weird.

I welcome and embrace that our support comes from all over the place.

Not sure I can see where I had a pop at Sunderland, perhaps you can enlighten me.

I also have to say you’re not being that welcoming, telling people who have a different opinion not to support the club

Also I can spell Mackem

Bully for you, it isn't a word I recognise, mackem-makem still derisory to your own kind ffs.

Suggesting that our attendances would be very poor.

If people don’t like the fact that people from Sunderland are Mackems or that Sunderland AFC is Sunderland’s club then maybe they need to turn their attentions elsewhere.

I wonder if people from the Wirral get upset that Liverpool FC are Liverpool’s team or that their supporters get called scousers.

Well get over it then

Is it lost on you that Durham can’t muster a team while Sunderland can.

Mackem, Makem or Mak'em is the informal nickname for residents of and people from Sunderland, a city in North East England. It is also a name for the local dialect and accent (not to be confused with Geordie); and for a fan, whatever their origin, of Sunderland A.F.C. It has been used by (a proportion of) the people of Sunderland to describe themselves since the 1980s, prior to which it was mainly used in Tyneside as a disparaging exonym.[1] Prior to the 1980s, the people of Sunderland were known as Geordies, in common with the rest of the North East. An alternative name for a Mackem (except in the sense of a football supporter) is a Wearsider.

According to the British Library, "Locals insist there are significant differences between Geordie [spoken in Newcastle upon Tyne] and to the speech of the inhabitants of that city.and several other local dialects, such as Pitmatic and Mackem. Pitmatic is the dialect of the former mining areas in County Durham and around Ashington to the north of Newcastle upon Tyne, while Mackem is used locally to refer to the dialect of the city of Sunderland and the surrounding urban area of Wearside".[2]

By the 1980s I was in my 30s, fuck being a mackem, if you enjoy the name given to you by the shite up the road enjoy..................

They would be a lot lower than they are now mate, not having a pop that’s a fact, our support comes from all over.

I also don’t get your point that people should go elsewhere if they don’t agree with you, do you not want the best for SAFC, never heard that from a Lads fan, very strange

Well done, you can use Wikipedia which draws from many sources including ill informed individuals.

You’re not from Sunderland, not a Mackem but insist you’re an authority on both. You’re not. We were calling ourselves Mackems while your pit yacker forefathers were marrying their sisters.

What’s your problem with SAFC being Sunderland’s club and people from Sunderland calling themselves Mackems? Neither is any of your business.

I don’t think people should go elsewhere if they disagree with me. I think that if they have a problem with SAFC being Sunderland’s club then it’s irreconcilable and they should probably direct their affections elsewhere.
