The Garage

It's a place to keep rubbish I can't be arsed to take to the tip. I'd like to convert into a room, mainly to accommodate shite Ive accumulated over 30 years. Has anyone any experience in doing so.
Did it couple of years ago, split it in half, still got space for bikes and storage on front half, back half I put in some patio doors and created a chill out room for the kids to go in with their mates. Funky lights and stuff in there, they love it and have sleepovers with their pals in there sometimes.

I would suggest the reason that the majority of people don’t use their garages for their intended purpose is that they’re not big enough, why don’t builders make them of an adequate size?
It's a way to get around planning regulations. Build a garage as part of a house and you have off street parking, everyone knows it will never be used to park a car in.

There’s no room for a car in the new-build house garage but you need a space for three wheely bins anyway and you have to move two cars off the drive at daft o’clock every two weeks or more so you can get one of the bins out for collection ( except the one week when you don’t and you leave it out overnight, but the wind catches it so it crashes into your car and puts a dint in the door).

So you get rid of one of the cars so you can at least get the garage door open and get the bin past the remaining car ready for collection. But you still have to get up at daft o’clock because there’s nowhere else to put the bins.

All because builders can’t seem to get their heads around the need for a place to put the car AND the wheely bins.

We don't even call ours a garage anymore. We call it the shedage.
Would struggle to get my Mrs Fiat 500 in it. Like a f***ing Lego garage.
Great little workshop though.

I'm getting my loft boarded out so I can move a load of the shite out of the garage and make it a useable space.

In time though I'd love to put up some stud walls and insulation then put a proper floor down. And use it as a gym space.

I can't see why local authorities allow planning permission to builders without stipulating that garages must be wide enough to take modern cars.

I know builders want to get as many plots as possible on the site, but they should be restricted to a minimum width.

Older houses, you can understand it, cars are wider now. Though plenty of people just can't be arsed to put their car in the garage.

I built a garage extension on my house. Earlier cars went in, then my van, because i had all my tools in. Couldn't get our present car in, so its now a workshop -storage area.

Literally just had ours done. Made a massive difference

Not trying to hijack the thread but maybe add to it.......We have a freestanding double length garage (used for storage), and would like to convert it to a proper annexe, bed/kit/living/bathroom.

Any ideas on costs or companies interested?
TIA

When I moved in with our lass (no), the garage was a tip, all sorts of shite in there and very little storage.

Ended up fitting a full length worktop that I got for nowt, and a load of shelving, storage boxes and stuff for my fishing gear, xmas decs and other stuff and got my rods hanging from gutter clips from the roof beams.

Nothing gets dumped in there now, it's my little sanctuary where I can sit and make my tackle up.

We converted ours couple of years back and knocked through into the sitting room so we`ve got one canny big rectangular living / dining area.

Bit kingspan to build the floor up, garage door out / bricks and window in, bit electrics / new radiator and plastered. Took me longer to paint the kernt than it did for the builders to build it
