The Garage

It's a place to keep rubbish I can't be arsed to take to the tip. I'd like to convert into a room, mainly to accommodate shite Ive accumulated over 30 years. Has anyone any experience in doing so.

Parents did it after my Dad had a stroke. They had a long garage with a workbench at one end and you could get two cars in, one behind the other.

They kept the roller door and built a wall at that end, so it's more like a shed for storing tools, ladders, etc. The rest was made into a wetroom, bedroom and they put patio doors in so he could easily get out into the garden. Meant we could keep him at home rather than put him in a care home.

We are having ours converted end of the month. Partioniong it off so the back 1/4 will be for storage with an external door to the side, and the rest of it a decent enough size room.

Started clearing it out at the weekend - 7 tip runs so far and I’m only about halfway through. Don’t half accumulate some shite.

That's part of the idea, so that we can live downstairs when we get older.

One of my pet hates, houses with integrated garages. Barely anyone uses them, just make a nicer house with another room, not a house with a giant white garage door stuck on the front of it.
I would suggest the reason that the majority of people don’t use their garages for their intended purpose is that they’re not big enough, why don’t builders make them of an adequate size?

Yeah, I've seen some, barely get a small car in. Still, even if bigger I still reckon not many would use them, most have double or sizable garages near me, they all still park on the driveways. Builders probably love them, just means 1/5th of the house their building is an empty room, I'd rather pay a bit more for a home complete, than buying a home with garage to end up converting, or using as a junk room.

if you don’t mind me asking what ballpark quotes did you get for the conversion. I had some eye watering ones, even without plumbing being needed.

In our old house the garage was converted into utility and toilet but the front left as a small garage/store with roller door still on. It was useful and I miss it now we're in a terraced house. Need somewhere for bikes and outdoor stuff if you have kids.

We moved onto a house where the garage was converted into a room. I'd much prefer it as a garage. We don't use our bikes half as much as we would as it's a tight faff going round the back and having to get them out the shed and having to go in the attic for stuff that would normally be in garage. Think it was handy for previous owners as they had 3 teenagers. Our next house will have a garage.

Ones of my pet hates is garages that are converted. It becomes a useless narrow room that you can’t find anything in other than a small sofa for what, a second living room that doesn’t get used. I’d far rather have somewhere to keep my motorbike, my tools, the kids bikes, our camping gear etc. It is somewhere to chuck junk too but I don’t think that’s a bad thing if you keep on top of it.

It's really in preparation for getting on, we want to try to stay in our house rather than going into care, so we plan to create a small shower/WC and bedroom so that we can live downstairs if necessary. It's a long way off hopefully.

If you don’t have a downstairs toilet then it makes total sense to partition some of it off. When I eventually do my extension that’s what I’ll be doing for a toilet and shower. But I’ll be keeping 2/3s as a garage for storage. I’m also planning on putting a door from the garage space in too so kids and dogs covered in mud can go through the garage and into the wet room to shower off before going into the house

That would be my ideal scenario. Perhaps a wet room and laundry room if it would fit.
