The finest band to ever come out of the USA

Springsteen's first album was 3 years before SSJ's.

Aye, but Southside Johnny was established on the New Jersey live scene before Springsteen. Springsteen himself acknowledges the debt in his autobiography.

Southside Johnny was from Ocean Grove, the Methodist camp town next to Asbury Park. He was our local king of the blues, ergo his sobriquet “Southside.” He was a softhearted, crabby closet intellectual, very soulful and slightly unhinged, but he knew everything about the blues and soul artists, their careers and their records.

Actually I could have said Prince and the Revolution, Public Enemy or Talking Heads anarl.

with a singer/song writer from Scotland? ;)

The Monkees back in the day (huge US band) also had a British input.... so i'm sticking with REM
and second choice would offer up Smashing Pumpkins (partly because their singer cancelled entire tour at their height to follow British band Curve on tour around the USA )
