To be fair I would have taken the application of Turkey in a heartbeat ahead of Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, some of the former Yugoslav states and Newcastle. It's also vitally important that we keep states such as Ukraine and Belarus at arms length.

Turkey is an industrialised nation and they have worked hard to achieve this. In terms of policing it's borders it is far more aggressive than any European or North African country. If they could sort their human rights issues out I'd let them in tomorrow... at the expense of the states mentioned previously, including Greece, Portugal and potentially Eire - as they have proven they can no longer contribute financially.

It's isn't just immigration from outside the EU that's a problem, it's also the mass movement of people from new members of the EU to more prosperous countries like our own. With the likes of Ireland, Portugal, Spain & Greece on their arses, I'd expect to see a lot of these nationalities upping sticks and chancing their luck within the UK as we've already seen with the old eastern block countries when they joined up.

Why would those people go to the UK though?

There are a load of people leaving Ireland at the moment, but most of them have the sense not to got to somewhere similarly crippled by the recession.

there is definately more spanish and protugese looking to come to the Uk at the moment.

Marginally, and the vast majority of the Irish unemployed work in sectors that are bollocksed in the UK too - construction, banking etc.

Loads and loads of people here are buggering off to Oz, Canada and Germany. The UK isn't as attractive destination as it once was, especially outside London.

I've said before and I sincerely hope i'm wrong, but I suspect that 2011 is the year when people in the UK finally realise just how in the shit they are. Not quite Portugal, Ireland or Greece, but some way behind the other major European countries.

many of us acknowledge it already its the few with their heads in the sand who think you shoudl spend yourself out of it instead of being frugal.

Like a gambler chasing bad bets.

Fiscally we are ina far better postion that Portugal Ireland and greece purely because of the dosh the financial sector generates.

Tax revenues are on the up and spending is being brought under control

But the deficit is still perilous, and the tories are arseing around the edges before yielding the hatchet. Tax revenues will plummet once the cuts start in earnest, and it seems that a lot of people have forgot about that particularly Damocles sword.

I agree that the UK will never become another Greece or Ireland, but for most of us it's about what happens day-to-day.

how much income tax do you think £22k a year public sector worker pays like?

The question really is how many workers are going to be made redundant, and what is the difference between their joint prior tax contribution and future benefit liability.

Based on very topline figures and best estimates, I get the figure coming in at around £FUCKLOADS.

Alternatively, we could stop worrying about countries that simply aren't our concern, bail out of the EU and start concentrating on getting ourselves out of the shit without some unelected office clerks in Brussels/Strasbourg constantly leaching every spare bit of cash from us to help out countries incapable of managing their own affairs.
