Unions aren't divisive - yet anyone who isn't in one is a freeloading scab?

Well old Arthur Scargill got caught with his fingers in the till, so much for unity and strength.
All those lads following him doing without as he sorted himself with the funds.
Aye what a proud history

And Neal Greatrex: Miners' leader guilty of stealing £150,000 from union care home

But yeah, all together, eh.

Has anybody found out what went on with Lavery yet? Google seems inconclusive.

I predict I won't hear from @FRANK BLACK again.

I would love to know what the Union Members thought of this:

MP received £165,000 from trade union

I fully supported the miners during the last strike marra to the tune of a hundred pounds or so on a weekly basis from my pittance of a wage at that time, that I, could barely afford along with food donations but trying to take down a democratically elected government and to be the paymaster of other, past, Labour governments does not and will not never sit easy with me.

Have a very, very close look at all of the DUM officials and more latterly the MP's expenses who were former miners. You may just have your eyes opened.
That was a sterling effort to support the way you did during strike. I have no knowledge of DMA /Durham NUM officials but all MPs incur expenses running staffed offices to get through govt and constituency business.
It is fashionable to slag off MPs but I would hope ex miners would take a leaf out of Dennis Skinners book

Yeah. If you're not in a union that's what you are. And finding a few examples of corruption in 150 years of history - well done.

How old are you out of curiosity?

And what about professions where you can’t be unionised? Are they scabs too?

What about service industry workers who strike and ruin the lives of people not in that union? Are they scabs?

In my 50s to satisfy your curiosity. How old are you? And I'm a union shop steward and safety rep. Unpaid. Like all union reps.

If you can't be unionised (rare) or if you don't understand what unions do to make work safer and protect terms and conditions then I don't have a problem with that. A lot of young people through no fault of their own these days don't get a chance to fund out what unions do.

You however appear to have given it some thought and attack a movement that has done more for working class people in this country - than any other movement in Britain.

And of course service industry workers who strike are not scabs.

Your age doesn't surprise me - slightly younger than my Dad who loves the Unions - but also still believes the Miners strike is on.

I fully understand what Unions do - and applaud the sacrifices that men and women made when these changes were needed. However, my experience is that most Union officials still believe they're fighting 'the man', are incredibly divisive - and are more often than not, thick - stewards generally just being the loudest in the group. You may be the exception to this - however, as you've said anybody who isn't in a Union is a scab, then I tend to think you're a loud mouthed thicko.

The Unions have had their day, IMO.

I wasn't clear enough about the service industry question - to add context, in the case of Southern Rail employees ruining peoples lives - are those people whose lives were ruined (lost jobs, relationships etc.) are those affected people scabs, if they aren't in a union or don't support 'the union stance'?

No one lost their jobs or relationships bacause a train wasn't running man. The RMT have had 48 days on strike to protect jobs and safety.

I also should have been clearer - not everyone not in a union is a scab - you however are anti union so if the cap fits.

Unionised workplaces are safer and unionised workers are better paid. That's a fact. Not open to dispute. Why is that not something to support?

Odd that - people saying they did lose their jobs and relationships - right here: Jobs lost and broken relationships: legacy of the Southern rail crisis

Clearer? You clearly said anybody not in a Union is a scab.

And on your last point - I'd love to see evidence of this please. You and I both know that is PR at best.

Granted, Unions will have fought, in part, for laws to make work places safe for us ALL - you don't have a special book of extra safety for union people.

Do the maths, employers: strong unions are good for business | Abi Wilkinson

Need to stop harping on about the past. Mining a long gone industry. Time to celebrate the North East for its emerging skills and technologies. Sooner the unions and the Labour Party and put to bed the better. Sick of telling youngsters that the Labour movement is a dead movement. The only politics for young ambitious working families are the Conservatives....

you realy, really should look into DUM officials and the former DUM officials that stood for parliament....I did. One local MP should have been investigated. As I said previously, I have more affinity with the Tolpuddle Martyrs than the DUM.
