The cry for 4-4-2

Agree, it's a very simplistic response and is unlikely to work
Clough or Shankly said football is a simple game made complicated by idiots.

In Div 3 get the ball in the box..statistically we have two of the best strikers in this division in recent seasons - we have bought them lets trust them..

To play with 1 striker is like playing with the handbrake on in Div 3.

When we went 442 against Burton we were shocking imo. You need two different kind of forwards, and we don’t.
Different kind of forwards?

Wyke and grigg?

We need to keep the ball on the floor, pass it quickly to feet, and have runners supporting Grigg.

Having Wyke on the pitch makes us play badly IMHO. He tempts us to hoof it more and to put high crosses into the box from wide, which doesn't help our very small team at all.

Have to play only one of Leadbitter, McGeoch and Catts then two central midfield runners (09, Honeyman or even Gooch).

Then Morgan for pace and directness and McGeady for quality.

I'm just not sure where Maguire, Watmore or Power fit into this at all. If we need more pace we have Kimpioka, Watmore and the new lad.

And Attack! Attack! Attack!
They were hoofing balls to grigg against oxford anorl.

I certainly don’t want to see us play 4-4-2.

For me I want Mcgeady, Morgan and Gooch all in a 5 man midfield if possible, and Watmore and McGuire providing competition and back up from the bench.

I certainly don’t want to see any of them sacrificed for Wyke, and Sterling hasn’t shown enough yet (albeit in limited time) to suggest we need to put new formation in place for him.

Who gives a fook how we line up, we're static, ponderous and have nee intent.....
We need some zip and purpose, get up the pitch and start peppering the white oblong thing....

This is the biggest worry for me, there's large portions of the game where we don't know who we are kicking the ball too, have no shape and it looks like kids randomly kicking a ball about.
Oxford and most other teams keep their shape and have a game plane.
Now this has been going on for a long time now, who's the person/s to blame?

Its cos we've been Rafagated twice and only train 5 days a week so will take another decade of mourning....

Leicester won the league with it, Atletico Madrid have reached the final of the champions league.

I think it can work if your two central midfielders sit deep and hit people on the counter. Morgan and Gooch wide attackers. Maybes just a shame we have Wyke and no other forwards.

Not totally dead but needs physical mobile central midfielders. Effectively dead to us.
Did you miss the signings of Grigg and Sterling?

Watford play 4-4-2, they're doing alright. Arsenals invincibles played it. Man Utd treble winners played it.

I think we could play it or 3-5-2, any formation that plays 2 strikers would be a start.

Man United was 20 years ago, arsenal 15 years ago.
These days it's easily countered. In your 442 if one goes up and one stays, if you lose the ball in the middle due to the opposition having 3 CMs, your are always outnumbered in the middle. Always gonna have a 2 vs 1 situation.
It's less fluid than 4231, which can become a 433 in attack, a 451 in defence.
Not as versatile imo and that is why coaches don't favour it so much.

If you have the right players, it’s fine.

Problem usually is that teams tend to pack the midfield a lot these days so you can get swamped. Both CMs need to be mobile and box to box.

Needs real athletes to make it work these days?

I suspect that in our case it would just mean mcgeady and Gooch (or whoever on right) do even more defending than even now and their heat maps would show them even more withdrawn than at present.

We would potentially be even worse attacking.

Leicester title winning side and Athletico Madrid are spot on comparisons for us like.

Who do we have playing the Kante or Griezman roles?

Don’t think we’re too disciplined with our formations..after the first punt, we’re usually scattered all over the pitch anyway.

So is any system.

What about Barnsley? They seem to score plenty playing that way.

If we win our next 2 games we are above Barnsley.

Why completely rip up our system for a side that theoretically isn’t even doing better than us this season?

Personally I’m ok with giving Ross the next 5 games to bed the new lads in and picking up a few points in the process.

If after Accrington away we are still outside of top 2, then I’m sure Jack will look at system as well as personnel changes.
