Is this:
He has built an excellent reputation as a first team coach. Read comments from any of the Man U players he was involved with if you need reassurances. Good tactician and organiser who earns his money on the training ground rather than the press room - exactly what we need

His age and experience. Successful spell with boro, never took them down and took them not only into Europe but to a European final. Yes, boro. The England thing doesn't bother me, in act he's probably a better coach/manager for the experience. I also don't think he'd be taking the job to further his career, buggering off at the first opportunity of a more attractive (southern based) job. RDM and GP probably would.

I think he'd 'get' safc having lived and managed in the north east. I wouldn't underestimate the benefits if this. We really need stability, 5 years minimum with the same guy. It's 50% likely we will go down this season while there has to be a chance short and the Italians will fuck off within the next couple of years. Mclaren could potentially steer us through this IMO.

He isn't tony Pullis.
