The case for Steve McClaren

To be honest, I think he's the one I'd go for:eek::eek::eek:

Looking at the prospective candidates, he's right up there isn't he? When Di Canio went and people started throwing names around like Pulis, McCleish and McLaren I felt even more depressed, but I've actually come round a little bit to McLaren now.

It's not great but we're bottom of the league having just sacked a manager after 12 games. The manager would have less say on certain aspects than he would like. We're not exactly the most attractive proposition.

Won Boro's only trophy and got them to a European final (the wrong competition but still)[DOUBLEPOST=1380014160][/DOUBLEPOST]
The boro fans hated him-during that european jaunt they twice came back to win from three goals down.It was only because the tactics went out of the window and they threw caution to the wind.

I'll have some of that:lol::lol:

Why's Jarvis getting abuse? They're perfectly reasonable points. Strange.

I hate to say this but with the rest of the candidates, he's the best of a bad bunch.

Unless....the club pull something out of left field which is unlikely

Ince, pullis and zola a massive no from me

I have nee f***ing idea..

Ince and pullis ...no no no no. Zola ,poyet and dematteo....dont know enough about them but more positive....mclaren, snooze fest and likely to be a slow painful monotonous death

If we're going down the has beens of mclarens ilk then hoddle would be my choice as he has the teams set out to play a certain style. The style is very similar to what di canio was trying to instill, however the formation wouldnt be as naive as he likes a five man midfield.[DOUBLEPOST=1380009167][/DOUBLEPOST]
What makes you think hed be a good head coach. Not first team coach, head coach.

I'd be happy with Hoddle. A bit more of a risk, due to his time out of the game, but I'm a big fan of his coaching ability. I suppose the biggest problem with Hoddle would be that his man management skills leave something to be desired, and after Paolo is that really what we need?

McClaren is far from perfect but to be honest we're hardly Manchester United, it sounds as if even Poyet might be unsure about joining us and hes done next to fuck all in management, and Di Matteo is very likely to wait and see what else comes up. If even out of work managers are unsure about taking the job then we have to accept that whoever we get will have some flaws. Personally I think McClaren is worth another shot in the prem, especially since he would seem to fit in well with the head coach vacancy. We'd all love it to be someone better/ more exciting but who is there? We need stability and, imo, a bit of experience (this isn't the kind of squad or pressure for a Solskjaer type with no PL experience). McClaren is definitely worth an interview anyway, Short should see what he has to say

Well said

On a purely football basis I wouldn't be at all opposed to getting McClaren at all however the reaction and divisions it would cause amongst our fans could be destructive to the point that it would be doomed to failure before it was given a chance so I'd have to say no.

Also the perception from outside SAFC and in the media is quite important in my opinion, we're in desperate need of some good PR as a club, even if it's just for our own disillusioned fan base (or maybe even for attracting players in future), we wouldn't get that with a McClaren appointment. We need someone who will be almost universally acceptable for the fans, media and general public. Not to mention someone who may be able to do the job and fit in to our structure too. For me the only two that would come close to fitting the bill from the names linked are Zola and Di Matteo.

Is this:
He has built an excellent reputation as a first team coach. Read comments from any of the Man U players he was involved with if you need reassurances. Good tactician and organiser who earns his money on the training ground rather than the press room - exactly what we need

His age and experience. Successful spell with boro, never took them down and took them not only into Europe but to a European final. Yes, boro. The England thing doesn't bother me, in act he's probably a better coach/manager for the experience. I also don't think he'd be taking the job to further his career, buggering off at the first opportunity of a more attractive (southern based) job. RDM and GP probably would.

I think he'd 'get' safc having lived and managed in the north east. I wouldn't underestimate the benefits if this. We really need stability, 5 years minimum with the same guy. It's 50% likely we will go down this season while there has to be a chance short and the Italians will fuck off within the next couple of years. Mclaren could potentially steer us through this IMO.

He isn't tony Pullis.

f***ing hell  you actually typed all that out?

You couldve just left out the first three paragraphs and just left the last part on, and you'd be seeing alot more positive comments

Can't see it personally, don't think he'd be a good fit at all. Plus he hasn't exactly flourished in his recent positions

He's a good coach, which is exactly what he is doing at QPR. Leave him be

Plus now that Jarvis has suggested it kind of nips it in the bud

Safe boring pair of hands but fuck me is it really what we have become actually considering Steve f***ing mcclaren for the job

And they dare have a pop at me for suggesting Trappatoni. Hypocrites.

You sir are just a f***ing lunatic though

So because you deem yourself not a lunatic therefore your frankly shockingly absurd suggestion carries more merit. Whatever.

I cannot think of a worse manager than McClaren. Everything that is not inspiring, successful, new, fresh, motivating, credible, hopeful or exciting about life all came together to create that truly awful, dreary old fart Steve McClaren. I will rip up my Season Card if he ever comes near County Durham.

What suggestion was this exactly?
