The BBC

In the T household we’ve used the bbc quite a lot over the turkey-eating season.

I got to thinking about value for money compared to other streaming services and concluded that for us, the bbc is well worth the licence fee.

Watched a lot more than usual terrestrial ‘live’ tv - news, sport, fillums, documentaries, weather.

Radio 2 in the car, Radio 6 in the house.

First website I look at in the morning (sorry RTG!), news, sport, weather, articles. Being an exile if I want avoid the doom and gloom of the match day thread, the bbc page is what I have up.

On iplayer we’ve watched Ghosts, the English, Motherland, Cunk on, Detectorists, Dark Materials, Repair Shop, various fillums, Inside No9, Am I Being Unreasonable, Top Gear, Digging for Britain, MoTD … the list goes on…

Be a shame to lose Auntie Beeb imho, there’s a lot of quality stuff that wouldn’t get commissioned on other platforms.

For the first time in ages I looked at the BBC news website earlier and it justified me not bothering with it for quite some time.
I can only imagine how bad Sky News website is.
Can anyone on this thread explain to me why a discussion about the licence fee has degenerated into a hateful, nasty, ad-hominem fest?

It's got me completely baffled. If supposed grown ups can get so riled up about a subject like that then they need to grow the fck up and get some perspective.

This place is seriously going down the tubes because of posters who can't have rational and calm discussions. It's OK to disagree without being vile to each other...

That’s down to the increased element of vile people on this forum.
Just stick them on ignore, it enhances the experience somewhat.

Hope that helps.

Shame the thread has degenerated. I started it because I have genuinely enjoyed the bbc over the last month or so.

We’ve got Netflix, Now and Amazon (yep, woopdidoo look at me) and while still using all of them, there’s been some cracking stuff on the beeb - radio and web included.

Sorry some people hate it, I just wanted to give credit to where I personally thought it was due.

I left the UK nearly 30years ago and I honestly can't believe in this day and age you're still paying £159 a year $320AUD to watch tv.

For that, in Australia, which is notoriously expensive, on top of all the free tv channels and their respective streaming services, some of which are superb, I could get a whole host of paid streaming services as well.
Amazon Prime $59/year
Paramount+ $90/year
Brit Box (Basically the best of BBC and ITV) $90/year
Even Netflix basic plan with ads would only be another $84/year

$323AUD

There's just no justification whatsoever nowadays to force people to pay that. Especially forcing the pensioners to pay full whack. That borders on extortion.

You are brainwashed by right wing bullshit

Saying woke and leftist shows how you are completely gone altogether oldie

Woke as an insult and there is no such thing as leftist

Do you consider yourself to be a right wing racist fascist?

Woke and leftist are the direct opposite to that

There's a middle ground, or are people only either Marxists or Nazis now?;)
(Don't get mad, mate, I'm just trying to lighten things up!)

It’s $280 AUD according to todays exchange rate. It’s more expensive than many streaming services, but it’s more watched than all the streaming services combined.

Australia is getting those streaming services you noted far more cheaply than in the UK. (And in the USA), but they have access to far fewer programmes on those platforms.
Price comparison in UK:
Amazon prime is $167 AUD
Paramount is $123 AUD
Britbox is $105 AUD
Basic Netflix is $148 AUD

.

It's value for money, despite the woke stuff, but it shouldn't be a stealth tax in this day and age. It's crackers.

Fair enough on the exchange rates. They move up and down but over the course of my 30 years I always look to roughly $2 - £1 as parity.

There is a lot of disparity in the pricing of the other services though so you'd hope you are getting a lot more content for your money.

If you're an Amazon Prime UK member do you get Premier league games for that or is that another extra ?

Honest question, but do you think the BBC would be the top subscription service in the UK if it was offered up as a choice alongside everything else priced as it is ?

Yes, prime in UK includes 20 premier league matches, at no extra cost.

wrt subscription service, if it happened (big if), I think the number of “current subscribers” would drop initially, but would still be hugely more than other subscription services. Subscription growth would happen after a year or so.
They would end any agreements with Netflix/paramount/Amazon making their programmes available only on their platform. The quality and quantity of programmes alone would be worth it. (TV/Radio/Streaming).

I've just had World Service on for a bit this morning following this thread, forgot I don't need a BBC Sounds account to listen to it. Thanks for the nod.

They'd be better if they culled people like shearer, linekar and the dross that is cbeebies.

I know its a drop in the ocean but paying those fuckers millions to. Introduce a football match is scandalous

I'm not sure why anyone would want to bin off Cbeebies when it's great for children.
