The BBC

I think it is an age thing. As I've got older I'm watching less and less conventional tv. I prefer a travel vlog on YouTube or a Korean drama on Netflix. I listen to a lot of BBC radio though.
The license fee is a bit archaic. A better idea would be to fund it from general taxation. The license is effectively a tax with another name It should be buried in everyday taxes then nobody can really complain if it's paid for like any other services we use. Also, especially in these times, it will be one less expense for people to worry about.
The thing about taxation is that the wealthy would pay more. The Licence Fee is a quasi regressive tax.

I agree with the body of your post but not this bit - it's a modern world thing, not an age thing. Nobody sits in front of Dr. Who on a Saturday night then all talks about it at school/work anymore. Streaming and youtube etc. have replaced 'conventional' TV for a lot of people.

Do you not think a Public Service Broadcaster is important for a country though? Such as providing vital information to citizens in times of war or natural disasters for example? There’s not incentive for a commercial broadcaster to do those things which is all a subscription model is.
Not really, no. Its 2023, not 1950. Im sure the message would get out.

I'm assuming no one has changed their opinion since the last one of these threads?

Loads of thickies don't understand the BBC? Aye, I'll assume so and leave it.

They're good at shielding nonces, I suppose. Did they ever get rid of that sculpture outside the BBC that was created by a nonce?

They do like their nonces...

Its crap , only ever watch the football on it and a bit of pointless now and again. Dont really listen to the wireless much either so I`d sack it off if i could.

I hear what you are saying and there is no doubt that reality tv shite is the drawcard for the younger audience, but, I'm not sure the younger audience are even going to be watching tv in 5 or 10 years. My 10year old barely watches it despite all the dedicated kids channels we have (including cbeebies ;)). They're all watching youtube and the likes. I just can't see how you can continue to justify it as sooner or later you're going to be providing content for the minority but expecting everybody to fund it. Plenty of quality content, movies, drama and comedy is made by independent companies.
I agree that viewing habits have changed but content is king and the BBC has to adapt but we shouldn't forget its position in the global marketplace which places it in a prime position.

I like the BBC and I’m ok with the fee as I think that the TV and radio is good quality for the money. Commercial TV and radio is getting beyond a joke with the amount of adverts.
That being said, media consumption has changed beyond all recognition in the last 20 years and I understand if some people value other outlets.
If the government launched a national newspaper and forced everyone to pay 30 quid a month for a daily copy I think there would be chew.

Since the Beeb decided it didn't have to be neutral it can get fecked for me. Sure I seen something about it costing £7M for a logo font change recently aswell, corrupt as feck.
Time for it to make it's money through advertising, then they can cream off as much as they want and force pro Tory politics down our throats all day long.

If Dr who was on on a Saturday night I'd be watching it.
You might be right about it not being age. But just a few years ago I watched a normal selection of TV even though I had YouTube and netflix.
I don't even like watching films now unless it's old James Bond, star trek, or other sci-fi. My tastes in TV have completely changed over a short period of years. I don't watch anything that I know will have killing or ott violence in it. So I put it down to getting older and my tastes changing. It might be something else but I can't think what. Boredom, seen it all before maybe? Then again that's also age.

Perfect example of what an earlier poster has said.
“Everybody who disagrees with me is a thickie.”
You always seem a good poster mate but this is daft.
People can disagree without being stupid.
It’s an arrogant take that’s prevalent throughout this thread.
There are legitimate reasons to want rid of the licence fee. And whether people like it or not it will go eventually. I have 2 kids and they never watch a second of it. I think I only watched the World Cup on it last year.
Needs to be funded differently. Not sure what that would look like but it’s definitely coming.

Settle down Bob.

Its an outdated funding method, thats all people are saying, im sure even you agree with that.

The board is full of them marra, gives them a sense of moral superiority over people with a different opinion. It's odd, but it keeps them happy spouting it, a kind of comfort blanket.
