The BBC

What’s the bbc??
I never watch it but love strictly, happy valley, line of duty, Wimbledon and David Attenborough
But they are on iplayer

Ps I’m not an under 25
Im just trying to gauge the feeling on here with the younger posters. I know what it is, but be nice for some context.

As i say the older generation are the ones who bang the drum to keep the fee.

Anyone under 25 on here got anything good to say about the BBC and the licence fee?

I'm late 20's and don't mind it but more so the stuff behind the scenes.

The BBC is by far the best reporter in the UK for international events with a network of reporters around the world on standby or they'll be there instantly.

Without it news would drop off a cliff immediately you just have to compare the absolutely car crash of it across the pond with the likes of Fox which is just trash.

Regardless to whether you think it's left, right or whatever news would fall off a cliff without it. There's much more to it than just TV and radio imo.

I'm 52 this month and I think it's archaic. I left the UK aged 23 having never paid it and not having one here I just can't fathom how they get away with it nowadays to be honest. Not with all the alternatives out there.
It also shows those who can put their point of view forward without resorting to juvenile name calling.
I was just thinking the same. No need for such a relatively trivial topic.

I ment the ones who want to keep it tend to be, in the main, older folk.

But yes agreed, its had its day and going forward it will fizzle away. Licence payers dropping rapidly, cutting services, layoffs. The writing is on the wall.

Oof! 😄

My mind boggled at how no two Night Garden episodes were the same when our kids were that age! There must’ve been thousands of em
When I was a kid I watched Mr Benn, Trumpton, Camberwick Green etc year after year. I never remembered seeing the same episode twice. I bet there were only about 30 episodes made of each 🤣

What they are. Its happening now.

Nobody is saying otherwise, You'll be on the subscription list then, when it inevitably happens.
Do you not think a Public Service Broadcaster is important for a country though? Such as providing vital information to citizens in times of war or natural disasters for example? There’s not incentive for a commercial broadcaster to do those things which is all a subscription model is.

Can anyone on this thread explain to me why a discussion about the licence fee has degenerated into a hateful, nasty, ad-hominem fest?

It's got me completely baffled. If supposed grown ups can get so riled up about a subject like that then they need to grow the fck up and get some perspective.

This place is seriously going down the tubes because of posters who can't have rational and calm discussions. It's OK to disagree without being vile to each other...

This place, like all social media, has devolved into constant ""culture war"" bullshit and playing the man, not the ball. And there are just more loons than there were 10-15 years ago.

FWIW I don't dislike the BBC, but feel the subscription model is on its way out, and the TV license is an unfair anachronism.
Netflix are struggling with their subscription service with people cancelling
The model the righties love

Yeah, sorry, I do love it because it gives people a choice. I suppose that makes me a stupid, knuckle dragging knacker though.
Love a good BBC thread to separate the normal intelligent people from the raging thickies.

Which is fine. I no longer use BBC much but my telly watching has diminished dramatically. May be an age thing.
I think it is an age thing. As I've got older I'm watching less and less conventional tv. I prefer a travel vlog on YouTube or a Korean drama on Netflix. I listen to a lot of BBC radio though.
The license fee is a bit archaic. A better idea would be to fund it from general taxation. The license is effectively a tax with another name It should be buried in everyday taxes then nobody can really complain if it's paid for like any other services we use. Also, especially in these times, it will be one less expense for people to worry about.
