Big toss to win and now we're up against scoreboard pressure.

We still have 16 wickets to see this out though (and this is for the Ashes). Remember Brisbane 2010 where we ended up 500+ for 1 after being skittled first time round.

Like I said at the start of the series all things being equal there's really not that much between us. Australia have been awful for the most part but it says something about the real quality of England that an avergae Aussie team shows up for a few sessions and we're tipping towards defeat

i agree, we should be good enough but i've just had a bad feeling about this test. the 10 day break has done them the world of good. getting lehmann in and allowing them to get their heads together and sort some problems out.

it was a cracking toss to win but they certainly made the most of it...

You have to expect the Aussies to put up a fight and go close to winning (or even win) a test. Just look at how close they got at Trent Bridge and now they're in the box seat here.

This talk of 5-0/10-0 was always pretty outlandish IMO. I'm very confident we'll win the series and we'd have snapped hands off for that 10 years ago. It seems now like some people won't be satisfied unless we beat the Aussies out of sight but that's just not realistic.

Even our shite teams of the 1990s took 1, and sometimes 2 tests a series off what was then a top Australia side.

Exactly. To whitewash a side over five tests you have to be a lot better than the other team, and England aren't a lot better than this Australia.

If 2006/2007 had never happened, whitewash talk probably would never have reared its head at all.

As I say, whatever happens in this test (and I still think we can draw it) I'm very confident we'll retain the Ashes. For years, we couldn't even win them, never mind retain them.

yeah, 1-0 or 2-1 would do me fine every day of the week. a draw would be a very good result here. our top order just can't fire as a unit in this series at all which is obviously a problem when you're looking at 500 plus on the scoreboard in this game.

I think that's hit the nail on the head. If it's so obviously a bad decision why would they need to confer? Mind you, I reckon Broad would use up the 2 referrals in his first over.

Agreed.

And don't get me wrong, some of our flaws in this series are not good and I don't like it. But that's life and we will still win the series.

Remember we also went to India and won last winter, hot on the heels of beating them 4-0 at home. This is a good era for English cricket but our team isn't perfect and some of our problems are sadly being exposed in this test.

The truth is that South Africa (as much as I dislike them) are some way ahead of us and a long way ahead of Australia at the moment.

Nail on head. I love England, but I'm not going to make out they're better than they're not, which is what most people have been doing before the series and on the back of the past two tests.

We have a very strong attack, we're pretty good at fielding, we have three very good batsman, one potentilaly very good one although who looks to be ailing somewhat, another three capable ones on their day and a tail. That's a big improvement on most England sides for the past few decades, that much strenght in depth, but it's not the composition of a great team, it's the composition of a good one.

Watching us sometimes, I would take issue with that. Obviously Anderson and Swann are very good (world class TBF) but Broad often frustrates and our third seamer position is very much up for grabs. Bresnan never convinces me TBH which leaves Onions, Tremlett and Finn.

In summary, we over rely on Anderson and Swann.
